The Lottery Wallah : This is another back to back street image from Calcutta. In this daily life image ,you can see a man counting lottery tickets with his eyes closed probably not to lose count of the number of tickets he may have counted so far.Lottery ticket sale is a govt.approved business dealing in denominations of 5,10 rupees to 100 rupees.A lucky draw is held on a particular date, when a ticket is handpicked and the winner is declared.A pauper can become a king by winning a lottery of 1 crore rupees. But then it becomes an obsession for many, who put in a lot of money with a view to win a lottery of high denomination. The man selling lottery tickets here seems to be living in utter misery and destitution, but he respects his livelihood by spreading the tickets on a broken chair. He has also kept a red hibiscus flower on top of the tickets, which is considered holy and auspicious by all Hindus. Hope you will like this one too.

Another fine daily life portrait. Ideally framed and with superb colours and clarity. We can all dream of winning the lottery and good luck to those that do.

Salam Farhat. A much more modest enterprise compared to the fortune teller.Obviously this man is preoccupied with more worldly matters, but both men are toying with fortune or good luck. You caught him at an interesting moment a she is deep in thought, again similar to the previous shot, however what the two are thinking about is very different. All the different shades of blue give the scene a feeling of harmony. Regards. Klaudio.

I find the shot and your notes most interesting.
I never realised that lottery tickets had become so important in India. It is a worry that people, who can ill afford it, spend money with little chance of recompense. Of course, those who are well off will not worry what they spend.
I remember when I was teaching, children telling me that they were going on fantastic holidays. When asked when this would occur, they informed me 'When my mum wins the lottery!' They really believed it would happen immediately!
Your photograph is very informative, the details are sharp with fine colour saturation. It is well composed, the lottery seller strongly positioned in the frame and, if his eyes were open, he would be looking into the space.
Have a great day,

Another learning post for me! Similar to your post on teh fortune teller, we also have lottery but its done in a very different way, with automated machines spitting the tickets out to would be winners. This seems a much more human way to do it, and the addition of the tlower for luck is a nice touch.
beautiful colors in this scene, the whole way you have composed it is perfect. I love that the man selling the tickets is the focal point, but in the background we have so much fascinating detail of the city. Nicely done as always!

Interesantan tekst o mestu i prodavcu srecke ...
Dobar trenutak snimka i kontrast, lepo pokazan prodavac srecke, lepe boje.
Lepo popodne i sve najbolje u novoj nedelji koja je pocela, srecno.
Good afternoon, this afternoon.
An interesting article about the place and the seller scratch tickets ...
Good time recording and contrast nicely demonstrated by the seller Cards, beautiful colors.
Nice afternoon and all the best in the new week that started, good luck.

The lottery Wallah, love that word, is it slang?
Great photo of this Wallah, hope you had a go, very interesting note and viewing the lucky Hibiscus red flower on the chair next to the tickets. Great colours, pin sharp, and super Pov,
kato (11630) 2014-02-04 6:04
You're capturing well this daily life in street by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive to see the spectacle in which the lottery wallah counts lottery paper and sells it on chair. It's also impressive in blue parasol for direct-rays prevention , cars which are running over the town and sighboards of backdrop.
bona (12187) 2014-02-04 7:31

What a colorful everyday scene, this reminds me of Milli Piyango (National Lottery) sellers of my childhood. Dad used to buy a quarter every month, half on special occasions.
jcpix (11024) 2014-02-04 17:58
Probably a good idea to stop and see the astrologer before deciding on purchasing a lottery ticket, yes? :) Superb note detailing the capture, bringing together the background with the imagery. Another wonderful street scene, one with its own character and emotion...and still with it your precision from the camera. Colorful and informative, thanks for sharing more of the local perspective. Enjoy the day ahead.

Thank you for your explanation, I appreciate it very much. I was just asking you for explanation, since I did not understood meaning of your comment. Problem with photos displayed here is that the quality is sometimes changing after upload and also viewer's screen can change the photo. I opened and enlarged my original photo, I've not seen any white edges, but the girl has white T-shirt and the white can glow a bit. Never mind I appreciate all comments very much.
Now to your photo, excellent detailed street shot. The light, clarity and colors are superb. Also the focusing is excellent, both the man and the street with cars and buildings in BG are in superb focus. Very well done photo.
annjackman (17457) 2014-02-07 1:07
Another super portrait in context of this man's working environment. You note also adds a lot to the enjoyment of this wonderful image. I like the saturated colours and excellent sharpness.
Very well done.

lovely street scene. I like very much the abundance of colors, they are so vivid and eye catching. There is so much blue and yellow which go well together. Nice to see also the posters behind with inscriptions in the local alphabet which binds the picture to the country. Very well spotted!

I consider lotteries are social calamities towards poor people living on false messages of hope!
Nice visual balance conveyed by the trio composed of the seller, the chair ant the newspapers bag.
elenimavrandoni (14197) 2014-02-10 21:28
I wish that this man wins the lottery!!
Farhat, on my last picture the two silhouettes are man and woman not two men!!
thanks for visiting!!
adores (33878) 2014-03-02 14:51
I hope he sells many! It's a good and colourful scene. The umbrela matches with the shirt and there are so many things to look at: the way he displays the lotteries on the old chair with the hibiscus, the city life in background, with the taxi passing and the billboars. A real Indian scene!
