The Street Astrologer : This street image from Calcutta depicts the story of a street astrologer, who is engaged in reading a book or a diary note book. A Lot of stones and other talismans are lying in front of him, which he gives to a customer as per his or her need. There are horse shoes also as well as various sizes of rings. The astrologer is also called a "najumi " from the arabic word najm, which means star and hence the najumi can foretell your future by the position of your stars and planets. The various talismans and magic bracelets are made to give relief to the customer in bad times or to allow him to continue with their good times.Foretune telling is a good bussiness all over the world. It is only because we all want to hear good news about our future and the astrologer is trained to do that.Linda Goodman 's is one book that many of us may have read to acquire knowledge about our zodiac signs. It may be a science to some people, supersitions to many, but there is always good fun in knowing about our future. You feel happy when somebody looks into your palm and tells you that you will gain wealth very soon or that a beautiful girl will soon fall in love with you.You think of it and the astrologer will come up with a tailor-made reply for you to make you happy. After all ,each one of us crave for happiness.Happiness in each moment of our lives and who else can be better than an astrologer to give us the satisfactory result.

Interesting capture of this Street Astrologer, with all his wares laid out in front of him. Interesting note and your caught him in a relaxed mood with his one shoe off and he reads his book. Sharp, nice colours and nicely presented.
Have a nice Sunday,

Ciao e buona domenica

Nice pose collected on photo, the man in white deep in reading of his (secret) astrology book, not noticed you at all, and perfectly placed on pic. space.
Details on display show in good sharpness, and his whole white cloths in fine contrast to the surrounding's.
Have a nice new week,

Salam Farhat. Fascinating subject with his immaculate attire, matching beard and studious pose. I wonder where Kismet sits in all this business of being a najumi. I like all his extras he brought- umbrella, water, stainless steel thermos, newspaper...Well captured Farhat. Regards. Klaudio.

I do not believe in astrology but I like your portrait of this astrologist very much. I like the point of view which sets him in context. Also, his stance which seems to exude peace and serenity. An image with excellent technical quality.

Two worlds, that is what I see. One that seeks to hold on to time, not wiling to stray. And the other, which whizzes by with a speed that tries in vain to catch the latest. Very thought provoking photograph.

An interesting post and note. As you say, fortune telling is big business all over the world, and I am used to seeing many forms in Ireland. At markets and fairs, gypsies offer to read your palm or the cards, I'm big cities and towns, signs point down narrow lanes to mystics and physchics, even the national newspaper promise to tell your future with their horoscope sections. What is new to me is this view of this man, to my Irish eyes an exotic version of the promise of the future. Exactly the meaning of this tie, sharing our worlds! I like very much that you included his many talismans and rings, and it's a brilliant touch that the car behind is whizzing past while he is calm and unmoving. Great post!
Thanks as always.

You're capturing well this street sce by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the Street Astrologer who predicts the customer's future using the tools, such as bracelets, stone etc,. It looks like a mysterious business. It is the same as fortune-telling, and it is the trade according to the demand of a man's of today crises of confidence.
marabu61 (11057) 2014-02-02 8:06
If only it would be that easy to gain happiness with a astrologer giving you false hope. But it seems to work for so many and then why not, it can help some to belief in the stars to lighten their burden.
I wonder if this man gets enough customers to make a decent living out of it. The talisman for sale seem to me a bit meager.
have a great sunday

I have never seen such an interesting man, who will let him belive, interesting accessories, nicely captured scene
Cricri (120143) 2014-02-02 9:38
intéressante scène de vie, beaucoup de détails a voir, l'homme habillée tout de blanc avec sa longue barbe, a l'aise sur sa chaise, lisant son livre, bonne note, belle présentation

A big business indeed, but I've always been curious to know just how much business comes the way of a street "vendor." Just watching the crowds pass by on a daily basis would say 'not much,' but if they continue to show up, there must some something viable. :) I love the candid nature of this shot, he appears to be completely unaware of your camera, going about his routine regardless of the situation. Great framing to show us the many items on display, as well as the slight blur of the car in the background, setting this still scene in motion. Another interesting street capture, nicely done. Enjoy the week ahead.

Nice street scene with great detail from Calcutta. Of course, to me, the motion blurred car whizzing by in the b/g is precious.

You know Fabbs I've consulted a village (and not street)astrologer nine years ago. Your picture is excellent, amazing items on the floor, good photo comment, I think he didn't see you taking a picture of him, he is concentrated and is reading a book, nice hues, good sharpness, have a good start of week

a superb portrait with attractive composition and warm lights, great sharpness and clarity, suggestive photo work

What a fantastic DL shot from the pavements of Kolkata. This elderly gentleman seems so preoccupied with himself as the world is speeding past him. It is sad to see him work at this age, but I am happy he is trying to lead a respectable life and not begging. Like the motion blur in the BG and the various interesting trinkets that this man has to sell. A fine photo, thanks for sharing.
SnapRJW (31629) 2014-02-03 4:18
A super note to accompany this fascinating glimpse at the 'trade' of the astrologer Farhat. I think one of the special aspects of this shot is the inclusion of the 'tricks of the trade'. I would love to see this man in action and to learn what significance he places on the horseshoes. I think of them as bringing good luck. A lovely DL scene. Warm regards Rosemary

I enjoy these street scenes. They show the real every day life in your country and that is very valuable. I also like the composition of this photo and the fact that you caught the man without having him posed. Nice colors and good sharpness.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

Sensational and curious picture, with this astrologer .... he predict the future .... and uses all these amulets to confirm his prescription.
If picture in your composition is superb, with that respectable, all dressed in white and the sight of all the items on the floor.
Nice day, giving a magnificent range of colors.
Lighting and sharpness, both are perfect.
Well done. I love the image.
Have a nice day.

Lot of 'fortune tellers' earn a good living of telling
to unknown customers what they want to hear!!
I presume this one wears an 'official getup' to impress the undecided.
Quite an exotic costume, indeed!

superbe scène quel artiste pour capter ces scènes de rue merveilleux ensemble et compo.
Bravo et belle journée

You have captured well the concentration of the astrologer. The point of view is showing the détails and the colours of shop and of his physionomy. The light has a good effect on the colours. Have a nice day.
ourania (46288) 2014-02-12 9:46
a very well composed picture that looks candid and allows us to study the mysterious astrologer at an apparently relaxing moment. I like how he's concentrated on his little book while a display of his intriguing "powerful" merchandise is lying at his feet. Wonderful rendering of details and colours, excellent depth and natural lighting make this peaceful scene so natural and vivid. I like the reference and contrast provided by the busy street scene in the background. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
adores (45627) 2014-02-28 16:09
Another good daily scene! I like his concentration on the book while the cars pass behind him and all the objects displayed on the ground to attract the clients.
