Calcutta Rikshaw Man Photo

Photographer’s Note

Calcutta is apparently one of the few places left in the world where rikshaws powered by men on foot still exist. Many in fact work without shoes also. Certainly the cycle-rikshaws are still prevelant throughout India and other parts of Asia, but the foot-powered ones not so. This is this man's profession. I am sorry but I am at a loss to explain the significance of the bell. But I do remember that we had a friendly exchange with this interesting man!

You seem to have had a great exchange with him as he gives you such a great and genuine and joyful smile. I like the light here and good use of sharp focus on his face and the background blurred from distractions. Nice portrait!

A great smile, wonderful. But also the interaction between the both of you and even more the light what shines over his face. Very good crop and framing but also the f4 did a great job in blurring the background. i like this one a lot, very good work.

Hello Steve,
It's nice to see this man looking so happy, considering that he has what I would regard as one of the worst jobs imaginable. You really caught him at a great moment with fine colours and light. A memorable portrait. I think the riksha wallas of Calcutta use their bells for telling others to step out of their way, just like blowing a horn.
