Photographer’s Note

From a remarkably quiet and peaceful corner of Sudder Street, the well known tourist ghetto of Calcutta. Most parts of this street are packed with cheap hotels (and one or two more classy), restaurants, cafés, money-changers, second-hand book-shops etc.
I was surprised to find out that this street also for some time was the home of Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), one of the Bengali intellectual giants – poet, playwright, novelist, composer, painter, philosopher and recipient of the Nobel prize in literature in 1913.
This bust of Tagore is situated outside his house, near the huge Indian Museum, in the heart of Calcutta.
