Lingaraj Temple is a temple of the Hindu god Shiva and is one of the oldest temples of the Temple City Bhubaneswar, a revered pilgrimage center and the capital of the state of Orissa.
Lingaraj means 'the king of Lingas', 'Linga' or 'Lingam' being the symbol of Lord Shiva worship.

The temple is more than 1000 years old, dating back in its present form to the last decade of the eleventh century, though there is evidence that parts of the temple have been there since sixth century AD as the temple has been emphasized in some of the seventh century Sanskrit texts. This is testimony to its sanctity and importance as a Shiva shrine. By the time the Lingaraj temple was constructed, the Jagannath (form of Vishnu) cult had been growing, which historians believe is evidenced by the co-existence of Vishnu and Shiva worship at the temple.

The temple is traditionally believed, though without historical authentication, to be built by the Somavanshi king Jajati Keshari, in 11th century AD. Jajati Keshari had shifted his capital from Jajpur to Bhubaneswar which was referred to as Ekamra Kshetra in the Brahma Purana, an ancient scripture.
The Lingaraj temple stands majestically as the largest temple in Bhubaneswar. At 55 metres high, it dominates the landscape with 150 smaller shrines in its spacious courtyard and is surrounded by massive walls lavishly decorated with beautiful sculptures.
This magnificent temple, dedicated to Shiva, represents the quintessence of the Kalinga type of Hindu architecture. Along with the Raja-Rani Temple, it is the pinnacle of the architectural exhibition at Bhubaneswar. It contains a profusion of sculptural work. It is built of red sandstone which gives it a darkest color.

Hello Andrzej,

You show us here a beautiful temple devoted to Shiva as well as an good example of Indian architecture.
The "pink and white small house” is completely curious in this unit.

Czesc Andrzeju!

Super notka!

pozdro,

mikeo

Hi Andrzej,

Excellent image from Bhubaneswar.
After watching some photos from the same place, posted here, in TE, I am happy to see a shot that has the photographic sense...
This could be a lesson for some..
I appreciate.
Enjoy.

Witaj Andrzejku!
To jest poprostu bajka...
Tutaj nie ma co pisać tylko ogladać i podziwiać. Niesamowite miejsce super pokazane.

This is a beautiful shot of Lingraj Temple .
It's make me wonder how you managed to get this wonderful shot when photography is strictly prohibited at Lingraj temple premises by the police .
I stay at a stone throw distance from this temple and yet to capature a good shot of this great Shiva temple.
Congratulations and TFS !

Witaj Andrzeju,

Pozdrawiam

Andrzej,
You have gone to places that are so interest and very rare, some place that is not filled with tourist. I absolutely wish to do myself one day. This is a very unique looking temple, none that I have ever seen before. The light is not the best but you did great with capturing all the details and texture of the temple structure and statues with great composition. Thanks for sharing this beautiful image and more.

hi Andrzej

Very well composed view of this monument. I like the color tone and texture with good sharpness and DOF. Really impressive structure.

Perhaps you can provide the photo info.

Hi Andrzej,

Thats an impressive old temple. I especially like the incredible sharpness in the detail. The splash of pink is surprising. I wasn't expecting that, but it adds to the scene. Very nice.

Graeme
