Photographer's Note

This is the photograph of a part of a heavily sculptured portion of the northern wall of the Assembly cum Prayer Hall of the ruined Sun Temple at Konark. The photo tries to demonstrate the exceptionally frank nature of the sculptured figures of erotically conjoined couples sculpted on the walls of the Sun Temple. As Prof.A.L.Basham observes,"Maithuna figures,of couples closely embracing or actually in coitu, are common enough as decorative features of many Indian temples, but those of Konark are exceptionally vivid".
