Jaggery Vendor : This is the image of a jaggery vendor at a local market in the North Bihar province of Muzaffarpur.I liked his posture as he was dressed in the traditional Dhoti-kurta,which is falling out of fashion in modern India.Even till the seventies of the last century,Dhoti-kurta used to be worn by the majority of Indians in North Indian Villages, but the modern day India is more comfortable in western outfits like pant-shirts.
Some tidbits about Jaggery :
Jaggery is a traditional uncentrifuged sugar consumed in India mostly. It is a concentrated product of date, cane juice, or palm sap without separation of the molasses and crystals, and can vary from golden brown to dark brown in color. Jaggery is mixed with other ingredients, such as peanuts, condensed milk, coconut, and white sugar, to produce several locally marketed and consumed delicacies. All over India, jaggery has religious significance to Hindus. Many of the festivals involve the offering of jaggery to deities during worship. Jaggery is considered auspicious in many parts of India and is eaten raw before the commencement of good work or any important new venture, or after good news is shared by family and friends

An excellent and original market scene from India.
It is nice to see that you could find a villager wearing the traditional dress of our country. Good eye contact and nice focus on the subject and his commodities.
Nice natural and well managed light. A very good photo my friend, thanks for sharing.

An interesting market scene and a good portrait of this man.
So today the Dhoti-kurta is falling out of fashion in India. I was in India in 1994 en in 1995 (twice in summer) and I remember to have seen many men in this traditional dress.
In this city the bike is clearly a popular mode of transport. I also once rented a bike in India. It was quite adventurous driving in the busy streets :)
Best regards, Paul

Fine candid of the Jaggery vendor in his classical garment and his display, and the background of bicycles. A scene from traditional past and attractive deviation from modern society.

This is sweet indeed. Very natural posture of the vendor and a typical street-side market. Nicely taken with good soft light. The background gives an impression of a busy market area.
Very very well done.

You're capturing well this daily life by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see big Jaggery on roadside market and traditional clothes of the elderly seller. He is doing the intrepid countenance. Anyway, it's interesting to hear that this kind of sugar consists with other ingredients.

Your note is most useful, particularly the decryption of jaggery, a substance unknown to me, and its uses. Your picture shows the man and his wares to great effect and sets him in context. It is well lit and has good saturated colours and excellent sharpness. I also like the bicycles in the background suggesting how busy the market is. A fine contribution that matches the ideals of TE.

The vendor seem to be unhappy when you took is picture. The point of view is showing the items for sale. The good luminosity is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

I've never heard of this product, so thank you for teaching me something new today! I would have thought this was a meat product! This is a great portrait scene, and the mans expression is excellent, he looks like is allowing the photo, but is not overly excited at the idea. This makes the scene very realistic and gritty. Very nicely done.

Hello Farhat - This is a really interesting DL shot and your note is informative; I have learned a lot. I thought that jaggery was a palm sugar and used mainly as an ingredient in curries (I bought some in Thailand where it is used quite a lot). I didn't know that it is also used a a basis of a sweetmeat, the delicacies sound delicious and I'd love to try some. To see the jaggery seller and his product displayed like this shows a lifestyle and culture so different from our supermarket pre-packaged food culture and the rawness of the food has huge appeal to me. I love trying new things and this looks really tempting. An wonderful look at DL in India. Thanks. Warm regards Rosemary

Namaskar dear Farhat
I had never heard of Jaggery before, so thanks to you I have learnt something new today. This is a superb daily life photo. The colours and contrasts are so rich and I love the way you captured this man, squatting by his wares. Wonderful work, thanks for sharing.

Piacevoli i colori molto delicati, quasi sfumati.
Ciao, buona giornata e buon inizio di settimana

ourania (46320) 2013-12-16 10:31
this picture could be quite old, I haven't found any clues that prove it was taken in 2013 and that's intriguing. It's an interesting daily life scene and portrait in working ambiance. The subject of the portrait is surrounded by a lot of attractive and informative details. We see everything with reference to him, though, as his direct glance and involvement in the photo are very significant. Light and colours are warm, clear and pleasing. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Terrific photo, and a solid note to explain and further help understand the image. This has very much a real, true to life feeling about it...it's always nice to get a sense of the local tradition and culture, especially when it involves that human presence. A lot of interesting items to see here, you did a great job presenting so much, but not overdoing it to where it becomes confusing. I like this one a lot! Have a great day ahead.

a fascinating glimpse of a traditionally dressed man in a traditional market.
The mans direct gaze gives a sense of drama to an interesting situation.

You show a much-interesting document about jaggery sold as 'pep vitamin' to be taken before arduous activities and let me tell you about all the energy manifested by my younger grandson after eating chocolate!!
I'm happy to discover the new substance and the exotic way to promote it.

Bikes, bikes, and more bikes! An most unusual but interesting photo, TFS! The description for jaggery sounds delicious but I think I will pass on this gentleman's offering. I might it with more sanitary packaging.
