Photographer’s Note

It is no secret, that food in India tends to be quite spicy hot. So no wonder, chillies are harvested in huge quantities. To make them ready for selling they are spreaded in the sun to dry them. Then the ones of poor quality are removed and the remaining ones are collected in big piles. This is done by putting a load of chillies on an empty bag and after some swings the load is thrown on top of the pile. You can imagine what happens to your unprotected eyes, nose and throat from so much chillies-dust in the air caused by that process...

The mans T-shirt is not colored from the chillies, as the redish color might suggest. It is rather because of Holi, the festival of colors, a very popular spring festival. You'll see a lot of sales for color powder in that days: During the main day of the festival, Dhulandi, people use to throw small bags fill with color powder or colored water onto each other. Foreigners are not necessarily spared when it comes to fun! It can be quite funny - if you are prepared! So I recommend to wear some old clothes during that day if you intend to walk in streets...

The picture was taken some miles outside Mhow along the road to Khandwa.
