Photographer’s Note
A group of flower-sellers and holy men hang out in the square in front of the Ram Raja Temple.
The latter was originally built by Madhukar Shah in the 16th C as a palace for his queen. She it was who brought back the sacred idol of Lord Rama from Ayodhya. While awaiting a permanent spot for the idol, she installed it in her palace. The idol, so the story goes, refused to budge when it was time to move it to the Chatturbhuj Temple. So her palace became a temple. It is the only place in India where the Lord Rama is worshipped.
Rama is the 7th incarnation of Vishnu, and is known as the Prince of Ayodhya. According to the Ramayana, he came in the form of Rama to free the world from the dark demon, Ravana.
