Photographer's Note
Ironically, Jainism has influenced the modern world most effectively with its doctrine of nonviolence (ahimsa). Looking back to the 20th century, it was the Jain teacher Rachandbhai Mehta who helped Mahatma Gandhi see the power that lay in the ethic and practise of nonviolence. When this was employed by the Nationalists seeking independence from British rule, achieved finally in 1947 CE, the method and consequent outcome set examples of behaviour that have directed others to pursue this route to achieving social and political goals.
