‘Kazbegi - Highlanders’
As I’m approaching the end of my series on Georgia I realize suddenly that I haven’t posted a picture with cattle on.
This while cows are really everywhere in Georiga and I mean exactly everywhere, with the big cities as sole exception.
Not like in my country, where you can find cows either in an enclosed pasture or in a cowshed, in Georgia these animals can roam free on the streets in the villages. At least in summertime.
I didn’t see many enclosed meadows. The cows are free to lookup the lush grasslands on their own. And in the evening they seem to return by themselves to their home or to a place where they can drink. Just a very few times I saw a dog guarding a herd.
To my great surprise, I also saw cows on fairly busy roads, such as on the Georgian Military Highway (the historical name of the main road through the Caucasus from Georgia to Russia).
Once on that road I even saw about fifty cows occupying the biggest part of a long bridge spanning a river leaving only a very narrow passage for the traffic. A very funny sight but since I was in the bus I haven’t good pictures of that.
So I’m posting here a trio of pictures of cows in the highlands around Kazbegi, in the vicinity of the Church of Tsminda Sameba that you can also see on two pictures.

I am delighted to have logged onto Trekearth for a short time to find this masterpiece. The rugged mountains and the clouds frothed up like a cream on a good cup of coffee create the backdrop for a bucolic scene of cows, traipsing along a steep mountain. It's a first rate travel photo of a place few people post from.

hello Paul, Wonderful view from far away of Tsminda Sameba and high mountains behind it. Marvelous layer of clouds above. And nice addition of these wandering cows. In Georgia they are every where except the cities, in India there is no such exception. The cows go also in very big cities.
Breath taking composition. Still four weeks to my trip. I can't wait and even more impatient I become seeing such photos. I would like to be there at once.

This is a nice picture of a country not very well known but that seems to be beautiful.
jemaflor (95957) 2014-02-27 23:38

Hi Paul. Your shots from Gruzia have been inspirational. The land meeting the sky (clouds at least) has made for spectacular compositions, as in this case.A land for a tough people. Great POV. Regards. Klaudio.

Goed foto werk, bedankt.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Lovely lines of the aggressive mountains. I like the spectacular valleys, well taken.
Have a good weekend.

A marvellous landscape view and a wonderful picture. Such a beautiful landscape! A very good picture with many fine details such as cows and some buildings far away.

The same place for the third time, but once again a completely differant kind of photo giving the view towards Kazbegi a totally fresh look. The steep scenery is overwhelming. Meeting cows roaming freely in the roads is a common sight all over Africa, and of course India (but then mainly in the cities), but I have never had such experiences anywhere in Europe (well...) until I came to Georgia. I was very surprised, considering that the country looked fairly modern and European in most other ways.
photoray (13981) 2014-02-28 11:09
Must be very contented cattle to have the freedom to meander in such a gorgeous mountainous landscape, and fine image of the craggy mountain backdrop with fluffy clouds, and a glimpse of mountain top castle.
mesutilgim (94502) 2014-02-28 12:43
Another topclass capture from Georgia with perfect pov and perfect chosen portrait format.
TFS and have a nice weekend

this is such an interesting and unusual location, the steep sided mountains and deep valleys create the most spectacular of landscapes with the foraging cattle adding their charm as well as giving a fine sense of scale.
The vertical format works well for me,a cracking photograph.
All the best, Les.

Superb! Just a breathtaking view, my congratulations! I like your series the photos from Georgia, but the last photos are great! I take off my hat, friend!
Best wishes from Russia!
Kamilutka (8105) 2014-03-01 3:34
now this is what I call different point of view :-) The monastery in far distance become in here an object of secondary plan, while the first one has been given to the grazing cows, which colors by the way correspond with the building. Super idea and excellent presentation!
I love the POV and the depth you achieved in here. The vertical format works very well for the image. Great colors and light.

Georgia looks almost like paradise for mountain and hiking lovers.
Breathtaking view and nature excellently captured and presented by You in this shot.
Also these cloud formations emerging from above those mountain tops add a lot of unique charm and mood to the scene.
Have a nice weekend

Wow! What a fantastic scene you have captured! This is another beautiful contribution to your last series of Georgia. Perfectly seen and composed based on the diagonals and eye-catching play of intensive tones. Simply awesome! TFS.
Have a nice Sunday!

Royaldevon (37925) 2014-03-02 4:22
You have captured the contours to perfection, here. There is no doubting the steepness of the inclines, which you have composed very cleverly for composition as well as effect. Oh, the thought of losing one's footing here is quite scary!
The photograph has great depth and interesting contrasts of lighting.
The clouds make the most beautiful meringue topping!
have a great Sunday,

Another superb landscape photo with such detail taken from an excellent high angle viewpoint and beautifully crisp clean emphasizing the quality of the all details in a great way.
Excellently exposed and good colour to finish off with a beautiful sky. Extremely great mountains landscape image.
Very well done.

Ahaha, that second picture (WS) almost looks like a countryside stampede...hope you didn't get trampled! Pretty easy going lifestyle to be a cow in these parts, yeah? What better way to spend your day roaming the mountainsides, grazing, and having a view like this...I certainly wouldn't complain! :)
Another spectacular view of this range, full of rich green landscape and vibrant blue skies with a layer of clouds in between...just all around natural beauty from start to finish. You previous pictures show a splendid vantage point upon the church, but this wider and more distant view really emphasizes the scale and scope of the region. Quite an impressive and majestic look over this terrain. Hope you've had a nice weekend. Take good care.
pili51 (1853) 2014-03-02 15:09
I just had to stop by give you positive feedback for this beautiful nature scene!, the little touch of green is sweet. A lovely shot with crossing diagonals... Lovely clouds in the BG. The exposure has been handled well....fine work!
Lots to enjoy here,

Another magnificent piece of wilderness!
Another wonderful picture!
Sharpness, exposure, colors and, above all, vertical format, chosen pov and composition are all oustanding photo qualities here!
TFS - congrats,
adramad (44798) 2014-03-03 7:51
Awesome this circus that form the mountains, and the monastery occupies a hilltop, surrounded by other much higher, lovely game diagonals that are giving the slopes of various mountains, closing the chain of summits panorama in the background, with the tuft of white clouds.
Very nice range of colors.
Splendid sharpness and good light.
Happy start to the week.
All the best.
Waylim (25502) 2014-03-04 9:03
Hi again Paul,
Another wonderful shot, this one showing the cows in the highland and the castle still within view. Beautiful green and the vertical format give more depth and height. Excellent quality shot.
ChrisJ (112259) 2014-03-04 12:40
Another gorgeous shot of this delightful alpine region. I like the shadowed old church on the bg hilltop and the fg cows in sunlight at right on the steep hill. Good sharpness and wonderful depth in the composition with nice color and saturation. Tfs!
pierrefonds (65244) 2014-03-05 17:04
Oceania (5202) 2014-03-06 6:32
All I can say is that the nature setting is breathtaking. These cows are free roaming around. This is the organic way to raise cattle. The meat quality and nutrition at their the best, I believe.
This is a very interesting picture we do not see often. Thanks for sharing.
adidas5nb (5743) 2014-03-06 23:18
wow..what a place and pov here.lucky to be there.like the different layers of light and nature.
abmdsudi (52963) 2014-03-07 19:57
Lovely peaceful pastoral scene with the grazing animals grabbing the eyes, love the light and array of colours and textures with the viewpoint winds its way down valley then to the majestic backdrop maintaining great detail throughout. What a nice landscape, the way the fantastic clouds stand out really atmospheric and not to speaks of the subtle clearness of the scene. Great camera skill in catching this spectacle. Congrats
nikkitta (17066) 2014-03-09 15:24
Missing the last captures
Beginning with this because I love captures with cattle in the landscape
This is quite impresivve and well composed, caws to give life, the church far away at the shadows and the mountains at the back, remember Heidy? Alway imagine her in a place like this
Very well done
ourania (44254) 2014-03-15 9:37
a very rewarding view of this magnificent part of the Georgian mountains. I like very much the bright green triangle of the slope as a foreground and the captivating depth and layout, our glance travels smoothly to the church and beyond. It's lovely how we are guided into the view from elements that take over from each other and how our glance finally raises to the wonderful clouds and sky. You managed the varying lighting very aptly and the colours are particularly charming. I like very much the natural, deep and calm views presented in the workshop. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
