‘Sighnaghi - First glance at Sighnaghi’
This is the view visitors have when arriving in Sighnaghi, at least when coming from Tbilisi.
A very pretty sight when you arrive somewhere for the first time.
Sighnaghi is a small town in the east of Georgia, in the province Kakheti.
With 2.300 habitants it’s one of the country’s smallest towns.
Beautifully situated on a hilltop, with most of its buildings from the 18th or the 19th century and with many cypress trees, guide books describe Sighnaghi as an Italian-looking town.
Perhaps my memories of Italy have been faded too much already because I didn’t think that the town had much Italian atmosphere. Maybe with the exception of this view at the arrival.
In contrast, I found it a wonderful Georgian city. More pictures will show that later.
Sighnaghi has been renovated thoroughly and yes, it is touristic (at least according to Georgian standards). But it is a very beautiful and picturesque town and a real paradise for photographers.
There are also lots of inexpensive hotels and guest houses.
The town looks out over the Alazani Valley towards the Caucasus.
On the picture the Caucasus peaks are hidden behind the clouds. These clouds usually cover the tops. You will need to be very lucky and have a special day to see the snowcapped peaks.
Economically important for Sighnaghi are the production of wine, traditional carpets and tourism.

Very beautiful place!
Very attractive picture!
Special regards to the chosen pov, composition, colors and exposure!
I really like the way you placed the branches of the trees on the upper fg!
That sky looks so nice too!
TFS - congrats,

very lovely hilltop view. I like the way you positioned the houses in between the greenery on the bottom, and the silhouettes of leaves on top. That horizontal line of puffy clouds also adds to the beauty of the scene. You really did a lot of exploring in Georgia, and it looks like you found many lovely towns.

What a glorious colorful shot depicting the architecture and nature beauty and its peacefulness with the nice greens and blues catching the attention together with the contrasting red roofs adding the overall beauty to the image. I really like the POV and the composition as well as the colours and pin-sharp details. Indeed a very poignant image so well planned and shot delightfully. Great work my friend.

Great view of identical looking houses on the hill top from your far away POV. Like the natural framing with the trees. From the TN I mistook those clouds as snow capped mountains. :-) but here the clouds are attractive as well and add a different layer to the composition. Thanks for sharing a nice photo.

A very attractive town where all roofs have the same colour. This is a very good uniformity that adds value to the scene. A very lush green surrounding and a good depth with the closer branches. A really stunning view!

Can't pronounce it's name, Paul - but a beautiful sight of this small hilly town.
Red roof-tops and tower contrast well onto the green slop and blue sky.
Clouds approaching from far in the west, looks as a biog "curtain" on nature's "stage".

Ottimi nitidezza e contrasto.
Ciao e buona serata

beautiful panoramic view of this lovely town. The composition has several interesting layers the white clouds for example or the silhouettes of the tree branches. Nice effect as if we were watching the place from a secret hide. Very pleasant colors and yet so natural. Your reportage seems soon to cover the whole Georgia. Very impressive!

Fine view framed by the trees of Sighnaghi red tile roof top village, on top of the forested hill, with a distant cloud grouping.
PS: Yosemite Valley can become very cold during a winter snow storm below freezing temps, but warm up to sweater weather afterwards when the sun comes out. And in the summer it usually is in the 60 and 70 Fahrenheit temps.

The overhanging pine branches and the cottony clouds provide a useful frame to present Sighnaghi. And as your note suggests, it does have an Italian look, evoking scenes from Silvio's gallery of Umbria. Your notes are always a pleasure to read.

A stunningly bright and colourful shot lots of greenery where focus of attention is on the catchy red roofs nestling on the hill. Looks like a great place to visit and wonderful for walks and photo shoot. The comp and detail a cracker with delightful stretching clouds finishes off handsomely, Congrats.

Sighnaghi was one of the placees I decided to skip during the last few days in the country because I just felt exhausted. It's a pity. A view like this would be tempting and you composed it well with the overhanging branches covering part of the sky. The clouds almost give the impression of snow-covered peaks. Maybe there was actually real snow behind the clouds. The colours are superb and the red roofs contrast nicely to the green hill.
marina7 (8051) 2014-02-04 10:58
beautiful, sunny and romantic, with a spring mood already!:) Love the view and colors creating a really nice contrast here. Gorgeous place!

Kamilutka (8095) 2014-02-06 3:53
great view on this small and pretty town on the hill. Very good use of the branches and bushes to frame the whole image in natural way.
Lovely depth and beautiful, saturated colors.
Thanks for sharing
danos (83817) 2014-02-06 4:55
nice the view of the village on the top of the hill as surrounded with all these trees and grenery, making the image even more effective and as a postcard.
Excellent the light and the colour management as the beauty of it.

A group of red-roof buildings sits on the lush green hill. How beautiful is that! This picture was perfectly composed and the color is very attractive. I really like it.

Excellent clarity and perfect composition for this very fine shot. The colors and the dof is very fine in this picture. Very good contribution to TE.tfs.

Anothe nice entry from Georgia. Very nice cloudy sky crowns the scenery.
The natural framing with the branches of the pine a the top part is nice.

Wonderful view, splendid place.
Excellent composition and colours.
I like light and sharpness.
kato (11630) 2014-02-07 3:59
You're capturing well this landscape by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the small town on hilltop and the surrounding rich greenery. It's also impressive in red roof of house. This is a place with the sufficient view which can overlook a plain. And, the belt of summer cloud draws out a special bonus.
Royaldevon (27065) 2014-02-07 7:31
One could easily be forgiven for believing that this is Italy! It certainly has the look.
I like how you have included the overhanging branches, giving a natural frame, adding depth and, also, a sense of peeping into a secret area.
Your shot is beautifully composed with regard to the rule of thirds and you have used a great dof.
Have a great w/e,
Gigidusud (13767) 2014-02-07 12:58
J'aime beaucoup!

We are up high and viewing through the trees on to this super town of Sighnaghi.
It certainly looks pretty elevated on this hilltop.
Great Pov, splendid colours, and well managed and presented.
Trust you are well and not having bad weather as we are in the UK, wind and rain, days of it.
SWEETFREEDOM (21848) 2014-02-08 4:56
the view is very nice, nice colors and details. good light management.
krzychu30 (15344) 2014-02-09 2:00
magnificent first impression of Sighnaghi!Impression, that makes we wanna get to know this little town better as soon as possible.
I like your presentation from this POV.These tree branches provide really nice natural frame for the scene. For me also the cloud formations are something, that help you to achieve so spectacular overall effect and finally combination of three dominating colors-green,red and blue-beautiful and expressive.
Have a nice sunday
adramad (35849) 2014-02-09 8:47
A superb picture of this population as well placed on top of the hill, full of thick woodland, creating a beautiful contrast with the red of the roofs, with splendid POV including the backlight of those tree branches on top of the image. the splendid sky is also a great bonus to the composition, and in itself ideal.
The color is beautiful, just like the perfect lighting and good sharpness.
Have a nice Sunday afternoon.
All the best.
emka (74187) 2014-02-09 22:47
The shape of the tower of the church indicates it is not in italy, but the small town looks very beautiful indeed. Nice red roofs. Splendid composition with the framing of the trees and the layer of clouds. it looks well worth seeing. I have it on my bucket list :).
josepmarin (57595) 2014-02-10 0:17
the branches hanging from upside of the framing are a good idea for to enhance the quality of your composition. They create a good contrast between the blue sky, the white clouds, the red roofs of this charming village, and the green vegetation.
The ensemble is very attractive and has a high graphical level.
An elegant work.
Angshu (54999) 2014-02-17 21:31
A lovely place indeed! Sighnaghi sits pretty on the top of a hill with fine red roofs and the tower dominating above. Well framed with the foliage which looks beautiful. Reminded me of a village in hillside Turkey called Sirince...Lovely work!
elenimavrandoni (14241) 2014-03-06 18:04
Paul, your series from your journey in Georgia are simply beautiful and very inviting!! your images are fantastic and your notes more than informative!!
thank you very much for visiting me and for your kind comment!!
jmdias (52918) 2014-05-31 6:49
maybe the roofs were so red to be an Italian village. haha.anyway to compare a country with another is ever not so good, sometimes even a side of my small town doesn't look like the other side...
nice view using the leaves like a framing, we can enjoy the view with this slope ahead and the far landscape that shows where the town was build. nice job.
