Photographer's Note

After a few days in Tbilisi, where we met Emilia (Taypeyka) we went by night train to Zugdidi, In low seson it was no problem to buy a sleeper for 11 lari (less than 20 USD). When we were in David Gareja, we met a monk to told us that in Mestia he had a cousin, Zula, who could take us to Ushguli. From Zugdid we took a marshrutka to Mestia (3 hours). We had to wait mre than two hours when marshroutka filled up, but finally we were around 12 in Mestia and Zula wa already waiting for us with his jeep (the driver of marshroutka called him). The road to Kazbegi was exciting but not compared to the one to Ushguli. Muddy, curvy, with fallen stones.. And still winter with a lot of stone. But the views were breath taking and well worth all the effort.

Ushguli (Georgian: უშგული) is a community of villages located at the head of the Enguri gorge in Upper Svaneti, Georgia. Ushguli comprises four villages.

The Ushguli villages contain buildings that are part of the UNESCO Heritage site of Upper Svaneti.

Altitude is 2,410 metres (7,910 ft).

It is located at the foot of Shkhara, one of the highest Caucasian summits (more than 5000 m). About 70 families (about 200 people) live in the area, enough to support a small school. The area is snow-covered for 6 months of the year, and often the road to Mestia is impassable.

Typical Svanetian protective towers are found throughout the village. The Ushguli Chapel located on a hilltop near the village dates back to the 12th century.

The Mikhail Kalatozov documentary Salt for Svanetia was filmed in Ushguli.

Ushguli is Europe's highest village at c. 2200m above sea level! Well, it lies in Asia :).
