A street on the outskirts of the old part of Batumi, the third largest city of Georgia, situated by the Black Sea near the border with Turkey.
Batumi was developed towards the end of the 19th century as a terminus of a railway built to deliver oil from Azerbaijan. A refinery and a pipeline were also built, and among those who made the city prosper were the Swedish Nobel family who were heavily involved in the oil business in those days. One of the brothers, Alfred, invented dynamite and made a fortune which is still used for the annual Nobel prizes.
Batumi also grew into a fashionable seaside resort for the upper classes of the Russian empire. Today it is still very popular with Georgian holiday makers and offers an intense nightlife during summer. Several luxury hotels have been built in recent years.
I suppose these low buildings date back to the pre-Soviet period, whereas the bigger ones behind look very much like they were designed and built in Soviet days. The church tower, also surely pre-Soviet, is now receiving a much needed post-Soviet restoration.
I will add two more pictures from the older, and nicest, part of Batumi as workshops.

My immediate reaction on seeing this photograph was the recollection of one of your early photographs - 'Going out with Grandpa'. What I admire about your photographs, is the unity you achieve by bringing together diverse objects / colours / moods......
The photograph is not exactly of a modern, spic and span, business district of a city. But there is neatness and beauty in the pavement and on the old cobbled road. There is modernity in the displays in front of the shops, in the clustered residential block in the background, and renovation and rebuilding of old buildings.
The photograph has a vibrance in the bright colours of the shops, in the beautiful lamp posts and of people walking on the pavement. It is here that we see the child 'going out with Grandpa'.
There is great flow in the composition of the photograph, and our eyes are made to follow a pattern.
Thanks for sharing this beauty.

You have written a very interesting and informative note as well as uploading a fine trio of photographs with which to illustrate it.
This picture is both colourful and well composed, showing the contrast between the brightly coloured shops with their brightly dressed pedestrians and the dull and drab high-rise Soviet accommodation in the background. Your two workshop pictures, on the other hand, show much more affluent and splendid areas of the city with magnificent architecture.
An excellent posting, true to the ethos of TE.

A very good morning!
A quaint busy shot, a slice of life in the street scene full of vibrancy and well-taken exposure. The view point subtlely illustrating day to day acitivity with a more definite flow of the eye through and all elements work smoothly and each has its own attractivess, particularly the lovely bright multi-colored of the new shops. But looking closely there is an obvious conflict hard to ignore there, the former commie eyecatching green not-so-old under maintenanced and almost rundown apartment block in the backdrop fails to provide the necessary harmonious blend to modern urban architecture depicting a stark contrast from two diff era. This is good observational picture and a geat draw that tells a story. Well done, TFS

There is an old touch to the place with the tiles on the roof and the lamp posts. The sidewalk with cobbled stone roadway creates a great contrast.Truly a great and interesting image with a nice not Alfred Nobel.

A charming old street with great colors. The communist buildings from the back are well known to me and I really hate them :D.
Well catch scene.

Une belle composition qui utilise parfaitement cette belle rangée de boutique multicolores qui forme une parfaite diagonale dans l'image.

Gert - great juxtaposed shot with the nice little shops in FG and the block apartment structure in BG squaring off for attention. In some ways, you've actually got old, not so old, and new competing - pre-Soviet shops, Soviet apartments, and little hints of modernism like the cash machine creeping in.
macondo (19766) 2012-08-30 6:04
I cannot actually remember seeing a photo from Georgia before, so this one and your superb note is giving me a real lesson. I do like your angle of view, and the contrast between the bright colours at street level with the drabness of the apartment block behind. It's good to see the restoration work on the church tower.
The street scene is full of life, and the lamps make a great series of verticals. The money machine looks almost out of place! I find the shops vaguely reminiscent of somewhere in a country like China, Malaysia or Singapore. Overall, a first class presentation, mastefully cropped.

Very good shoot of daily life in the city center.Nice colors and lightning use.Nice result of this job!

The contrast between the different types and styles of architecture is striking but the thing that grabbed my eye first was the strong rhythm formed by the people in juxtapo with the street furniture. Your angle of taking facilitated this rather nicely. A very good shot with a vital note, integrating the great cultural diversity on display here very effectively.
Kind regards from Rotterdam,

Very nice capture of this ancient city against a more modern backdrop. And thank you for the wonderful information. Seems like ATM machines are all over the place, just cell towers I found in the beautiful mountains of the Philippines. That's progress I supposed. Good lighting on this photo with good dof with nice details. Well done, tfs.
(The tattoo on Rhena's face was fake which I am also glad because she is so pretty to ruin it with tattoo.)

You're capturing well this street scene by a good angle and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see the contrast between indivisual pretty shops in this side and old/tall appartment in behind. It's interesting in streetlight and flower on street, too. And, people walking on street draws out the feeling of daily life.
Have a nice week.

a well structured composition that fills the frame with interest in a functional and elegant way. We get a good idea of the place, its atmosphere and daily life. The point of view allows us to share the same impressions as the people we see along the pavement. I like very much the perspective and sense of movement in this tranquil street. There is no empty space in the frame and we can feel the town close around us. Sharpness, clarity and lighting are wonderful, the colours natural and aggreeable. There are many details that vivify this scene and the one I love the most is the eye catching figure of the builder on the top right corner. The workshop pictures are great too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Hello Gert. We unconsciously compare photos with our own living environment. And so, the differences at first. The front of the shops along the street is colorful. The street lights are nice and old-fashioned. The grass-green painted balconies of the house in the background is very unusual for our eyes. All this together makes probably the attraction of any trip. The workshop is also very clear, because we see more of the buildings of this city. Even the history of the world is adequate in your post advantage. Rgds, Wolfgang.

une Georgie assez occidentale avec ses rues soignées, ses trottoirs, des échoppes colorées.Et dans le fond, moins réjouissant le terne d'une cité.
Une scène tranquille mais vivante en même temps.

This is an Excellentlly recorded documentary. I do find in some countries, there is ( are) ugly building(s) stands next to an beautiful ancient one. I like some of the Spanish approach,it seemeed that they built the modern ones with a bit distance from the ancient ones..

Hi Gert,a very original composition whit this long perspective made by the road and under the typical facades in russian comunist style.A lot of thing, details and strange colors, very very well done!Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

You have combined the old with new very effectively. I like those little shops in the old section with different colors . The street looks lively with people walking up and down. The lampposts are nicely decorated with hanging pots. The modern and dull looking building behind the old town makes a nice contrast. Like these kind of images.

Hi gert, I somehow missed this one. batumi, oh batumi, it was also the nice song in Polish. Nice composition with the old low buildings, very nice, and rather ugly Soviet building behind them. i like the diagonal composition. And there is man doing restauration work on the tower! Tiny but well visible. Excellent shot.
have a nice weekend

Registration was very nice. Good composition and excellent exposure.
KristinsCamera (2384) 2013-12-27 16:40
this juxtaposition is very engaging, gert. there's so much going on in this shot that i could spend quite a bit of time studying it. what first drew me in was the parade of shops, each in their own attractive but different color, marching across the photograph in a pleasing diagonal, which is made all the more interesting by the faded artifice that looms over it in the background. then add that tiny figure in yellow and red who's working on the old tower, the cobblestones, the flowers, the old lamps, and i'm thinking this would make a wonderful jigsaw puzzle :)
