[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi everybody,
This picture is taken at the yard of "Shavnabada" monastery, you can see this church in my galery "The church I go every Sunday".
This is a very special monastrey, they make their own wine, honey, cheese, they give shelter to narcotic and drug abused people, to those who have problems it life and help them.
These pitchers from cley (Qvevri; Churi) are used in Georgia (mainly in Western Georgia-Imerety)to keep wine. The pitchers are burried in the ground so that only round upper marge (in the picture covered with plastic) is awailable to see. As they are made out of cley, they can be kept only in a special kind of soil which is rich in cley itself and you can find this kind of soil mainly in western Georgia.
But the most interesting thing is how Qvevri is washed every year in autumn before peasant pours wine into it. In every village they choose thinnest man who goes inside the pitcher and washes it from inside. How it looks you can see on the picture of "Washing wine pitcher" by mchedeli in TE
As this picture was taken in 2005, these pitchers are long time back kept in Georgian soil and they are full of uncomparable "Shavnabada" wine, any doubts? come and taset it :)

Irina,

I really love this photograph. Especially striking is the contrast between the clay jars and the grass. Beautifully done! But tell us, how large are these jars? It is hard to tell from the photo what size they are. They could be 20 feet tall for all I can tell. Thanks for sharing it with us. Have a wonderful New Year.

Hello Irina.
Thank you for your very interesting notes about these unusual clay containers. I would never have guessed what they are. The shot is well taken, showing the lovely colour of them, and some lying down so we can see the plastic and imagine a thin person going inside.

Hi Irina,

I like your photo very much. These clay jars look great. And the story about washing them is funny and interesting. What they do when they cannot find the thin man?

As far as I can see, the horizon is a little bit tilted - at least that's how it looks. Nevertheless this is an amazing photo - your composition is very good. The long shadow on the right adds some curiosity. Your notes were also perfect. Now I know about quite an interesting tradition. :)
