‘Tbilisi - Tbilisi’s Ancient Churches’
From the ruins of the Narikala Fortress you have a good view of some of the ancient churches in Tbilisi.
The most known is the Sioni Cathedral (at the right side on the picture). The first church on this site was built as early as the 5th century. The church building as you can see it the present day, dates from the 13th century. Changes have been made in the course of the 17th till the 19th century. In the workshop you find a view of a part of its interior.
It was a medieval Georgian tradition to name the churches after well-known places in the Holy Land. So the Sioni Cathedral is named after the Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
In the middle of the picture you see a bell tower built in a complete different style. This three-story bell tower was built in the beginning of the 19th century in Russian neoclassical style.
This in remembrance of the victory of Russia in the Russian-Turkish War of 1806-1812.
To my greatest pleasure I could easily add to this picture of the church towers a view of the Peace Bridge. From some previous posts you will remember that I really liked that bridge.
During the last weeks I have posted a total of 30 photos of Tbilisi, pictures in the workshops included.
I feel that it’s time to move on. Perhaps you thought that already much earlier …
I've thoroughly enjoyed my days in Tbilisi, but Georgia is much more than only its capital.

Good morning Paul,
very nice the panoramic view of the place with the ancient churches of the town to dominating the place. The domes are so many with the bell tower in the middle to be really in different architectural style from the other constructions. The modern bridge coexist perfect with the old buildings of the scene.

Hi Paul, I write about the ancient churches but this modern bridge steels the show. Splendid presentation in beautiful colours and light. I see that Tbilisi is really worth visiting. I must see all these photos.

The Pinnacles of the towers rising from the flat roofs of the churches give a structure to the photograph. The contrast of the Peace Bridge with light blue shades against the sepia of the foreground is impressive. The black border lends elegance to the photograph. Thanks for sharing.

The contrast between the modern, sweeping lines of the bridge and the traditional architecture is really apparent here Paul. You found a very good vantage point and the bridge is nicely separated from the rooftops by the line of trees. A well managed and attractive panoramic view of the town. Warm regards Rosemary

Heel mooi gedaan, bedankt.

The catchy white and brown 'triangles' of the churches really attract the eyes instantly, indeed a mesmerising shot taken from an elevated viewpoint which is perfect to keep into perspective with wonderful immense details, warm colours and superb depth. Exposure is manageable where the delicious warm light has boosted the visual quality and nicely set off by the green setting. A lovely tranquil shot, Well done.

This is a good view combining very nicely the old and new that has come to characterize Tblisi. What are the round things by the upper right corner? Terminals for the ropeway to the fortress?
rychem (13553) 2013-10-23 9:17
This eye catching bridge is simply fantastic, you have shown the shape of the bridge very neatly, your photo is beautiful but the bridge is a special eye catcher
ChrisJ (91168) 2013-10-23 10:32
A superb high pov with a striking old versus new contrast between the futuristic bridge in the bg and the ancient conical stone churches in the fg. Excellent sharpness and well framed and composed. The diagonal river adds dynamism and the warm reddish tints in the stone contrast well against the steel blue bridge structure. Tfs!

Ciao e buona serata

what an interesting place! The traditional buildings contrast with some modern elements in quite eye catching way. Very pretty cityscape and the wholeness composed really well. I like all the natural colors and delicate light which brings some life.
Thanks for sharing

Spectacular panorama. I like the composition with the old churches and the amazing modern structures in the back. Well taken.
krzychu30 (12605) 2013-10-24 0:56
excellent composition showing us the good symbiosis of old and modern architecture.I must admit this "clash" of different architectural styles do not fight with each other, just complement each other in a very pleasant way.
And what is most imposrtant here, namely your POV.It provides us with magnificent view of Tbilisi and you did great job with framing the scene.
Have a nice day
Oceania (3199) 2013-10-24 5:57
This bird-eye view is marvelous. The bridge is very modern among the old buildings. The light is soft and inviting. Thanks for showing us.
Sonata11 (31197) 2013-10-24 6:45
very, very beautiful composition and spectacular view. Impressively beautiful church architecture and the modern construction of the bridge, behind. Beautiful light, colors, sharpness, clarity. Well done . Like it.
Best regards, Barbara

Now that is quite an interesting contrast between the old churches and the modern bridge. Great high POV to give us a good overview over the church complex.
have a great day

Sensational this great view from a high point, showing us a great time, both the original bridge as modern design, such as ecclesiastical fabulous set, we see in the foreground, this variety of towers, are a real beauty.
Very nice palette with the soft light.
Great as good lighting and sharpness allows us to recreate the image.
Well done. I love it.
Have a nice day.
All the best.
josepmarin (56471) 2013-10-24 9:44
you have mixed skilfully the different architectural styles which offers us the ancient churches and the spectacular modern structure of the bridge, in a good visual angle, by means of a deep and sharp image. The good light and the quality of the colours enhances the beauty of your composition.
Excellent work, my friend.

Hello dear Paul,
Nice capture from Tblisi but on the other side a perfect evidence that the city planners didn't work there well !
I ask myself how they have decided to build this modern bridge veyr close to those nice old churches with traditional architecture.
TFS and best regards

macjake (45556) 2013-10-24 23:04
wonderful view isn't!
you have a little bit of everything here, the modern architecture, some classic architecture, a fine postcard view, and excellent lighting.
final result is a fine photo
jemaflor (74014) 2013-10-25 3:55
ikeharel (43877) 2013-10-25 4:02
Great sight from a high POV over town, bridge and no-less than six turrets prominently above city skyline.
Modern structure of the bridge in super contrast of styles.
Photojob done with great skill.

a great capture of this church and the amazing bridge. Some great contrasts in architecture. Great composition and good note.

Salut cher Paul
An interesting juxtaposition of modern and antique architecture. The elevated POV demonstrates this so well. Beautiful sharpness and depth, excellent contrast. A superb composition.
kato (9492) 2013-10-27 20:18
You're capturing well this cityscape by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the ancient churches with a beautiful shape and a conical roof, and the bridge with an innovative design. And, it's also impressive in the quiet river which flows all over a town and the surrounding greenery. It looks like a peaceful city. It's also tasteful for interior with the fresco in Cathedral's inside oF #WS.

Bonjour, cher Paul,
John_F_Kennedy (41526) 2013-10-28 6:20
nice overview to the city of Tiflis. A great composition.
mkamionka (27045) 2013-10-28 8:48
I like it very much. We are slowly getting the 360 degrees view of Tbilisi. Great contrast of the modern bridge which we already know from your previous pics and the traditional church towers all having similar design. Fantastic POV, very well used!
jcpix (6504) 2013-10-28 17:09
I remember this well from an earlier post, one from a greater distance, but that unique bridge certainly stayed in my mind. A great perspective you've achieved, and one that merges the old with the new. This is a wonderful look at the two structures, one on top of the other as it were in this composition. :) These elevated positions always offer up some of the best views with the most dimension, and you have a great one here. Plus, the soft directional light adds another interesting element to the entire scene, warm and welcoming. Very nicely done. Have a nice day ahead.
About the cactus...yes, they can get quite large, anywhere from 12 - 18m.
cornejo (22432) 2013-10-29 5:46

Good afternoon and happy week.
Best wishes from southern Spain.

It's very good to see photos of this nice country, we rarely see them here.
I like this pov. You're showing several monuments and that new bridge that catch our eye immediately. I can also see a curious building at the top right. Looks a really interesting country!
Angshu (52888) 2013-11-01 1:12
The bridge is almost an antithesis of the churches we see in the FG. Interesting the difference in style between the Georgian & Russian style steeples. Beautiful from your high POV...
npecanhuk (56350) 2013-11-01 17:34
Attractive urban details!
Beautiful picture, with special regards to the chosen high pov, composition, exposure and colors!
That city seems to have a harmonious mix of different architectural styles!
TFS - congrats,

Good comparison of the ancient churches and so modern bridge construction. Another interesting photo from Tbilisi, today this country is one of the main newsmakers in this region. I mean the last voiting there.
Excellent work! TFS!
