‘Tbilisi - At the crossroads of east and west’
This summer I traveled during three weeks through two countries in the Caucasus, Georgia and Armenia, and admired the exceptional cultural richness of the old churches, cathedrals, monasteries, cave towns, bold modern architecture and the overwhelming nature in the high mountains.
The friendliness of the people living on the southeastern border of Europe thereby gave a special value to the trip.
The next weeks I will be posting pictures mainly of this region. Maybe not all of the photos will be good quality. Especially I like to show images of these countries for people who are interested in this region or in a possible trip to it. Learning about the world through photography, I read on the main page of TE :)
However, certainly feel free to advice so I can improve the quality of my pictures in the future.
TE-members interested in these Caucasus countries will find more pictures in the workshop. I hope you will find them interesting. Both countries are areas where travelers are welcomed by the locals and can enjoy an unseen friendliness and helpfulness.
Today I start with a general evening view of the center of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia that has a population of about 1.5 million inhabitants. The picture shows the coexistence of ancient and modern architecture along the banks of the river Mtkvari. I took it from the Narikala Fortress.
At the bottom left you see a few towers. The well lit one is the tower of the Sioni Cathedral of the Dormition, a Georgian Orthodox cathedral. The name refers to Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
According to Wikipedia, it was initially built in the 6th and the 7th century. Since then, it has been destroyed by foreign invaders and reconstructed several times. The current church is based on a 13th-century version with some changes from the 17th to the 19th century. The Sioni Cathedral was the main Georgian Orthodox Cathedral and the seat of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia until the Holy Trinity Cathedral (later I will post a picture of this cathedral) was consecrated in 2004.
Right behind it on the picture, you find the Bridge of Peace, leading to the Rike Park at the other bank of the Mtkvari. It is designed by the Italian architect, Michele de Lucchi.
Personally I find this a very beautiful bridge but it was a controversial construction due to its cost, modern design (for the old town of Tbilisi!) and the exact place where it spans the river. Some inhabitants of Tbilisi refer to it as Saakashvili's (the president) toy.
The oddly shaped and very eye-catching contstruction on the edge of the park isn’t finished yet. It will become a theatre-showroom and is a design of architect Massimiliano Fuksas.
This construction is even more contested. At present there’s no further worked on. It is said that only a small minority of Tbilisi approves this special architecture.
According to some the design represents the traditional Georgian wine drinking-horn.
Just above it on the hill, you find the Presidential Palace, another design of Michele de Lucchi.
I heard the comparison with a mix between the White House in Washington and the Reichstag in Berlin …
At the top left you can see a small part of the Tbilisi Public Service Hall that houses an assortment of government organisations.
I admit that on this picture the balance between ancient and new is not in equilibrium. Later I will post more pictures of historical buildings.

Hi Paul, fantastic picture! So Many details, I do not jknow what to see first. Eyes go from the old church tower to the beautifully lit bridge, then this very strange object and splendid dome. Breath taking view.
Georgia is "trendy" lately in Poland, one can buy quite cheap flight to Kutaisi. I will look at your photos and maybe i will go there too.

The thousands light bulbs on scenery, with three major monuments gave this a grand view over town from the high POV taken, Paul.
The bridge is most notable, leading the eyes towards the Theatre and thereafter to the palace.
Marvelous pic. in fine texture, conveys well the charm of the city at night.

Ciao e buona serata

This is a beautiful night shot, and one that shows us so many landmarks at the same time. I like the illuminated buildings and bridge that you pointed out in your note, but the theater that's currently under construction really caught my eye. It's so modern and shiny. Your high POV, and the depth of this shot, are also great.

Very good dominant point of view on the city
Good control of lights

Une image onirique, tout droit sortie d'un rêve d'enfant.
L'image est superbement rendue. Félicitations pour cette composition et de la réussite photographique. Exercice difficile.

a fascinating introduction to your series of photos from Georgia. The evening view we're enjoying in this picture is deep, clear and comprehensive, the lights are very attractive and help us spot various important landmarks and get an idea about the density and style of the city. I like very much the play of the warm lights with the natural colours bestowed by the scarce but sweet evening light. I wonder about the final shape of the new Theatre and how well it will fit in the setting and match the character of Tblisi. The workshop pictures are very informative, interesting and useful. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,
macjake (45832) 2013-08-25 15:50
very interesting note!
Personally, i think its great to have some new modern structures mixed in with the old classics, its a bit for everyone - but i know alot of people don't feel that way.
that Bridge of Peace is very beautiful and artistic.
a great addition for the city.
looking forward to seeing more from Georgia.
a fine overview here

Always a treat to see images from places not often featured, and this certainly fulfills that ideal! A tremendous capture of the transition from day to night in a city/country that I'm guessing is unfamiliar to most. What a great look out over the city as it comes to life with the evenings lights and atmosphere. An array of pleasing colors and interesting (and new) details to scan over. You notes have layed this out to be even more intruiging, and have also provided a learning experience. Yes indeed, I hope to see more! :) Impressive presentation, thanks for sharing this beauty. Have a nice day ahead.
All the best,

Your opening photo of your travels is a masterpiece. An excellent night photo, without any of the illuminated areas overexposed. The colors are lovely, and let's face it, the scenery is attractive. Modern architecture mixed with historic buildings, a powerful combination!
adramad (31151) 2013-08-27 15:38
Wonderful panorama of the city in this great POV I guess you caught flying over the same to your arrival.
The image clarity of these first hours of the night is fabulous.
Magnificent lighting and sharpness very good to recreate the image.
Well done. I love it.
Have a good night.
olive224 (2665) 2013-08-30 11:22
There are really some great quality images in your gallery !!
I like most of them ;) especially your night shots
This one for example is well composed and the light is well managed ;)
kato (9673) 2013-08-30 17:47
This is an interesting photograph, so it mingles with old and new architecture in here. You show well the whole aspect of the city with nature and architecture in blue hour with light up. The winding river is flowing through the center of the city, and rich green trees stand in a row in the both banks of the river. It's impressive that a lot of houses are standing on the loose slope, too.
ChrisJ (91360) 2013-08-31 1:49
A good blue hour shot of Tbilisi with well managed perspective considering the tilted horizon and sloping terrain in the bg which would confuse a beginner. No confusion here! The fg buildings are perfectly perpendicular. The diagonal stream adds dynamism. The bridge makes a fine centrepiece. Tfs!
nikkitta (9179) 2013-09-03 12:10
So you were traveling across not much known countries the first one here presented is a marvel both of technique and composition from a great point of view
Reading your note and looking and discovering the building add more interest at the image
holmertz (31552) 2013-10-24 12:04
Parts of Tbilisi are really spectacular and the green and yellow lights create a magic atmosphere. This is a highly interesting photo, not least for the almost chocking contrasts of old and new. I quite liked the new bridge, although the park by its eastern end was rather dull. But that new theatre-showroom looks a bit out of touch with the surroundings. It's amazing how fast it must have been built. I was there in May-June 2012 and I have no memory at all of seeing even the beginning of such a construction in that place.
I think most of these drastically modern buildings and other projects have been the "babies" of Saakashvili, so there will probably be much less of that kind after he has stepped down. Will the new parliament in Kutaisi ever be used? Will the new city by the Black Sea, near the border of Abkhazia, ever be built?
jmdias (48491) 2013-11-03 13:13
there isn't so many images from this region and I am happy you visited the place. excellent this blue hour view with these golden lights. we can see many interesting and beautiful monuments. lots of details to enjoy. TFS.]
