[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have already posted one picture from Wardzia i.e. cave city, situated about 70 km from Akhaltsikhe.
Vardzia is a cultural symbol with a special place in the hearts of Georgians. In the 12th century Giorgi III built caves as fortifications. This city was established in order to protect people against Turkish invasions. This rocky city had almost everything what should have a normal city including access to water (through tubes). The Turkish invaders were passing this place many times but since the city was well hidden (the entrances were not visible at all, they were covered)they had not notice it.
The main place of the town was a monastery. The queen Tamara turned the military complex into a religious one. It grew into a city of 50,000 people. At present there are about 10 monks living in the cave monastery.
I met only one of them.
I spent there over three hours in total silence with no single man around (except a monk). In such conditions you can really feel the atmosphere of this place.

A really strong frame, and what an amazing place! I assume the hand-rail is a modern addition :) I was thinking it would be nice to see more of the drop on the right, but I like that we can see a hint of the path and steps on the left, connecting this viewpoint to the rest of the caves.

10 men in a place designed for 50000. They must rattle around in there like a pea in an oil drum. No wonder it was so quiet.

Hi Emilia! I also have a picture from here - I think that's your arch at the top of my picture - can't figure out where I was. Nice to see the place again. Did you bathe in the hot spring afterwards?
