‘Akhaltsikhe - Anachronism’
Hereby a view inside the Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe in the south of Georgia.
The main picture is taken just inside the entrance gate.
Right in front of the spot that I had chosen to take this picture a car was waiting for someone with the engine still running. I expected that it would drive away and took a position on the stairs at the entrance so I could use these to set up my camera (you know, travelling without tripod). But the car didn’t move and I saw a police officer approaching. I guessed that he would ask me to go because it was already after closing time.
The police officer asked me very friendly where I was from but I don’t know if my answer meant more to him than ‘beer and chocolates’ … To my surprise, he asked the man in the car to drive backwards so I could take my picture.
The car drove a few meters back and stood there with its lights on. According to the police officer this was ok to take my picture. I'd rather see the car disappear completely. But yeah, shooting conditions aren’t usually ideally.
So here it is: ’Anachronism’ in the centuries old Rabati Castle, with special thanks to the friendly Georgian police officer.
Up to know only two pictures of this Rabati Castle have been posted on TE:
one by Gert (holmertz) and another one by Emilia (taypejka).
So here some more info on this rather special ’city within a city'.
In the workshop you will find two more evening shots. Of course, I also took pictures during the day. I’ll post some next time.
Information found on: http://georgiaabout.com/2012/08/24/about-sights-rabati-castle-a-jewel-in-the-crown/
Built in the 13th century, Rabati castle developed under the influence of different cultures over subsequent centuries and this is reflected in its architecture. Within the 7 hectares castle complex there is a church, a mosque, a minaret and a synagogue.
In the 13th-16th centuries the castle and its town of Akhaltsikhe had been the residence of the Jakhely princes.
During the following two centuries it was part of the Ottoman Empire and in 19th-20th centuries it became part of the Russian Empire.
In the Soviet period the closure of the border with Turkey isolated the town and resulted in the decline of its importance. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the changed geopolitical situation has given a new stimulus to the development of the town.

Love this my favourite colours gold and blue, the castle looks fantastic in this night shot. Funny note with the policeman on your side, I think the car adds to the scene reminding us of our present century.

Bonjour Paul ,
adidas5nb (3945) 2014-01-19 23:30
nice shot and mood created by the light distribution a and the shadow dark parts.love the frame.great shot.nicely seen.
krzychu30 (14346) 2014-01-19 23:46
I´ll start from a different side, namely from the sky.Its deep blue color looks truly magnificent and cretes here some kind of mysterious atmosphere. And besides it contrasts so nicely to the illuminated Castle(blue vs yellow tones make always great contrast)
Have a nice day
SWEETFREEDOM (20552) 2014-01-20 0:24
interesting and unknown (at least for me) castle. beautiful all the three pictures. good exposure even without a tripod.

Kamilutka (5683) 2014-01-20 5:53
your Georgian series make me more and more interested in this direction. I did not have idea that this country has so much to offer. For example this castle can compete with the famous Lisbon castle easily. Good POV and nicely captured iluminated walls. I love the contrast between the yellow stone and dark blue sky.
rigoletto (33749) 2014-01-20 6:02
oh wow! paul, you will almost make me go and join malgo with her georgian trip. this is wonderfully beautiful, and original. never seen this corner from that country, and the first time is probably the best (haven't seen gert and taypejka versions, though). great blue hour colors, and suberb sharpness despite your choice of f3.1 (f3.1 with tripod???). having the car is a definitely good idea and adds a mysterious story, pulling this one out of the postcard genre into something more cinematic. compliments!
yquem46 (37476) 2014-01-20 6:39
adramad (32851) 2014-01-20 7:15
Certainly the title is very appropriate, because this car in the wonderful medieval setting, this completely out of place, beautiful set of volumes, with walls, towers and dome, well lit, contrasting with the darkness of the street.
Very good brightness and sharpness, with beautiful colors.
Well done. I Like
Have a good day.
holmertz (33489) 2014-01-20 8:22
You created a rather fantastic composition here. The contrasts of yellow and blue, of light and darkness, the shapes of the various elements of the castle and the closest buildings have created what makes me think of a cubistic painting. I actually think the car with its lights on benefits the composition greatly by adding yet another shape and more lights and shades. I think that policeman had a good idea of compositions ;-). As for the workshops you may not be satisfied with them technically, but I would have been very happy to take any pictures like those. I only spent an afternoon and a night in this place and wasn't feeling quite well so I never made it up to the castle in the heat. I was anyway happy to enjoy the fabulous view from downtown.
rychem (15412) 2014-01-20 9:10
Excellent photo of this castle. Perfect night photo with beautiful light taken against the dark sky, compliments
chrislo (3349) 2014-01-20 12:40
cornejo (24573) 2014-01-20 12:42
Hi Paul, very good night shot of this interesting castle very well lit, nicely captured in this beautiful image with good sharpness, light and color. Very good and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good night and happy week.

Very beautiful and attractive night picture!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
Even that car fits so well in this image!
TFS - congrats,
jcpix (8296) 2014-01-20 18:02
An amusing little story to go along with this picture, I'm sure we've all had similar experiences. Too bad we don't have full control over our scenes, yeah? :) I don't think the car and its headlights take away any of the beauty from this shot, in fact, knowing why it's there actually adds to the overall appeal. An excellent display of light, both in color and tone. The way each element is separated by the lighting effects adds depth and distinction. The slight blur of the flag sets the picture in motion, and the darker, natural framing adds a sense of mystery. Crisp, detailed and textured...a really neat picture! Enjoy the day ahead.
divail (8198) 2014-01-20 18:47
saxo042 (35170) 2014-01-21 0:04
Interesting note and a very fine picture. The illuminated impressive castle stand beautiful against the blue hour sky. The car and its headlights also add to the composition.
dkmurphys (44082) 2014-01-21 6:23
Superb night scene. I like the contrast between the warm parts of the light and the cold dark ones. Well done!
tatadalou (4571) 2014-01-21 14:31
Ciao e buona serata
abmdsudi (35282) 2014-01-23 4:03
Good view point with lots of warm glow on the castle shaded by the blue night sky. Excellent compo with lots of added interests and love the inclusion those light
on the building and vehicle in the fg creating extra color variation. This is good long exposure night shot that you get it right and the end results are fabulous. The flag is an icing on the cake! A good technique Well done. Congrats
josepmarin (57065) 2014-01-24 2:11
an interesting and nice experience with the car and the policeman in your note.
Though the car is in the framing, it does not spoil your fantastic blue-hour shot, with the castle nicely lit.
The contrast of the golden tones of this lighting and the a bit blue sky are very efficient aesthetically.
A good exposure management.
nikkitta (10418) 2014-01-24 10:32
Quite true the title, a car just going out of this impresive castle
But what catchs more the atention is the contrast between the golden light and the and the sky a golden hor capture nice framed
Like the waving flag on top
Congrats, very well done
mkamionka (28031) 2014-01-24 14:10
very funny story with the policeman. That illustrate well that people interested in photography see the world quite differently from average people. You could have actually cut away the car and focus closer on the fragment of the architecture but nevertheless it is quite pretty as it is. I like very much the color of the sky, very well balanced with the well lit architecture. Simple and yet so interesting design with the domes probably belonging to the mosque which you mentioned. A great contribution to your reportage from Georgia.
Have a great weekend,
photoray (7920) 2014-01-24 16:51
Very impressive architecture image, especially for the night setting highlighting the middle in golden glow, then the surrounding walls in subdued darkness. And the main attraction the classical gothic immense Rabati Castle.
And we are all thankful the police officer was understanding and not of aggressive or mean persuasion.
Thanks for sharing,
emka (67259) 2014-01-24 22:35
Hi Paul, So this is Akhaltsikhe, on the way to Vardzia. Indeed, fascinating place! if only I had time for it and the weather w as favorable. I like to read such stories as here, copy and paste fro m Wiki if it is only information I just skip :). Kind policeman. When I was in Palmyra, our bus stood just in the arch of the gate. I said to the tour guide something that I disturbs the view, he took mobile and told the driver to go away. Aren't the photographers crazy?
But this car here with its lights on looks here interesting. Splendid late blue hour shot.
Warm regrads Malgo
Royaldevon (23402) 2014-01-25 1:11
I was entertained by your notes.
Your experience with the police officer will have given this shot an added emotion for you!
I actually don't think that the car detracts from the shot; it is strongly placed and acts as a mysterious introduction to the scene, its lights linking with the general theme of artificial lighting.
The castle itself is quite stunning. The warm lights make it glow against the night sky. The textures of the walls and the height of the structure are sharply captured.
Amazing to think you did this without a tripod.
Have a great w/e,
ikeharel (46944) 2014-01-25 2:25
Good morning Paul,
Red the note, and must say that the outcome with the car on photo, worked well and mingle superbly on the scene.
Nice both the WS and this night sceneries, light perfectly set on camera.
Enjoy a nice weekend,
marina7 (7785) 2014-01-25 5:08
lovely night photo. I like the lights, contrast and deep colors, especially the sky, though its processing looks a bit weird and spotty on my monitor. Amazing atmosphere, stylish composition.
willperrett (4837) 2014-01-25 5:15
Do you know, I can't decide whether the presence of the car adds to the scene or spoils it. And as it's such a fine balance, I guess it's fine to be here. It's certainly a talking point and has given you your title! Well managed without a tripod, and the last of the light in the sky is a real bonus.
delpeoples (50263) 2014-01-26 5:27
Salut cher Paul
What a wonderful story behind the photo, making a very memorable and fun experience for you. How kind of this policeman. And it is always good to be able to communicate with others, despite the language barrier, and find things of common interest. Your photo is beautiful, demonstrating a lovely Blue Hour and wonderful contrasting architecture. The castle is ancient, atmospheric and beautifully captured.
eldancer1 (22413) 2014-01-26 7:54
Beautiful nocturnal scene! Love the warm golden colors of the castle against the blue sky. Good pov and nice details. Well done, tfs.
Waylim (24338) 2014-01-27 22:22
Beautiful blue hour photo. I love the combination of the deep blue and the golden light. The colors is so rich and deep, making the light really stand out with good contrast. I can see all the details and texture of the wall. Really good quality photo and good composition the frame works well. Thanks.
Cricri (95347) 2014-01-28 5:33
ruisc_pt (10251) 2014-01-30 6:16
Amazing story and a very good light management.
All the best
claudeD (28235) 2014-02-02 4:18
Very fine night picture from Goergia with an excellent composition and very well done light managment. I lke your contribution to TE very much.TFS.
With regards from Luxembourg
icesurfer (512) 2014-02-04 16:35
Indeed, maybe it would have been better if the policeman told the driver to just get out of the way, but still the image does full justice to the beautiful castle, especially with these warm lights against the dark blue sky.
Sharp details and nice contrast between the walls in the FG and the ones in the BG.
elenimavrandoni (11075) 2014-02-04 17:39
Paul, I would say that your nocturnes are stunning but actually all your work is stunning...marvelous light and a very beautiful composition!! a picture with great quality!!
all the very best
fabbs99 (13475) 2014-02-05 23:08
Beautiful lights in this image from Rabati Castle. It is sharp with good details, well saturated colors and nice composition. Well done. TFS.
mjw364 (6282) 2014-02-07 5:46
clearly the Police officer was not a photographer! Ha ha! But the headlights of the car are in line with the lights on the wall at least!
I was attracted to this in your gallery because of the contrasting warm light with the deep blue and because of the lines and shapes that give it an almost cubist abstract feel. Nicely composed and well executed in this difficult light.
mcmtanyel (7307) 2014-02-16 16:50
I think the inclusion of the car is a welcome addition to this scene. This is a marvelous night photo and your tripod worked very well. I love the level of detail that can be observed sharply and it is a very pleasant subject.
Indrasish (2517) 2014-03-07 22:29
Wonderful shot here.. I like the awesome composition and excellent light management.. Superb image quality and nice colors too.. Very well done..
Good morning and best wishes from Kolkata, India..
Didi (52415) 2014-03-08 9:30
