‘Ananuri, a castle and church complex’
Ananuri, a beautiful castle complex, is an easy day trip from Tbilisi.
It is situated in a wooded mountainous setting on the shore of a lake, the Zhinvali reservoir, formed by the building of a dam, the Zhinvali Dam, in 1986.
As many other fortresses, churches and monasteries in Georgia, Ananuri is built on a great photogenic location.
This fortified castle complex is built by the Dukes of Aragvi. The oldest parts date from the 13th century. It was the scene of numerous battles and remained in use until the beginning of the 19th century.
The fortifications consist of two castles. One has a large well preserved square tower. The other with a round tower is mostly in ruins.
Two churches are part of the complex. The older one dates from the first half of the 17th century of which the interior is no longer decorated. A larger Church of the Assumption is built in 1689. It’s a central dome style structure with richly decorated facades and the remains of a number of frescoes.
This and a lot more information is found on Wikipedia.
Please have also a look at the workshop where I show the same castle complex from other points of view.
Can you believe that it were pictures of Ananuri that had finally convinced me to visit Georgia?

Hi Paul, I believe that the pictures of Ananuri that convinced you to visit Georgia, after seeing your photos I begin to think about visiting Georgia too. Excellent photo, beautiful architecture, fantastic landscape around, the curvy road guides eyes gently to the beautiful lake. Superb!

un castello imponente in uno scenario fantastico.
Hai trovato anche una bella luce che lo mette bene in risalto insieme alla bella architettura della chiesa, che sembra più recente o mantenuta meglio.

That's a very nice picture of a beautiful castle.
The composition is good with the lake in the background (even if it would have been better without the car on the road!).

Hello Paul - An attractively constructed shot with the road leading us past the distinctive buildings to the lake beyond. It looks like some people are selling items under the tree, a good place to set up a stall! Very nicely seem and managed. Warm regards Rosemary

This place seems to be among those few that look just as good from whatever angle you see them. All three photos are remarkably beautiful. Georgia is certainly a very scenic countriy but the still not so developed infrastrucure makes it less accessible than many other countries. No doubt the country has the potential of becoming a major tourist destination.

Zeer mooi foto werk, bedankt.

this is how I imagine Georgia! The architecture is really wonderful and it could be enough to take good photo. In here we also have very carefully planned composition with all the details well thought through and pretty colors. The lake and the hills create very interesting background for the castle. Great DOF and sharpness.
Thanks for sharing

I particularly like the composition here, with the massive towers of the medieval castle rising on one side, the rolling hills and the roadway winding down toward the water on the other side. The note adds a great deal to the package, indeed in the best tradition of Trekearth.
Warm regards, Paul,

beautiful place and a great presentation. I like again the same characteristic shape of the tower this time in even more spectacular setting with some natural landscape behind. There is so much color here, it is a pleasure to see that and it really encourages to visit Tbilisi. One of my Polish colleagues recently did it as well.
Have a great weekend,
