One of the old shops in the market areas of Central.
"There goes the neighborhood
Saturday, July 28, 2007
The constant redevelopment of Hong Kong's oldest areas is drawing more public criticism, especially from those who believe in conserving the essence of local life. Vaudine England reports
Alison Kwan remembers playing on the steep stairway in the back of the Wing Woo Grocery store when she was a child. The business, on the corner of Graham and Wellington Streets, Central, has been in her family for three generations.
But she's looking forward to the Urban Renewal Authority's plans for change in the neighborhood.
"That's the way it should be I think. It is too old. As their children, we want them both to retire earlier - they are already 70-something," she says, referring to her mother and father. "But they love it here, especially my father - he has been here since he was young. He's sad about that, but there's not much he can do."
That's because her father, Kwan Moon-chiu, is a tenant, not an owner; and besides, the store doesn't make money any more.
"Their profit margin is already very low but they can't compete with the supermarkets - people's buying patterns have changed. The business actually runs at a loss but my father keeps on because that is what he wishes," says Alison Kwan.*

This is a great tribute to those old time neighborhood shops that are disappearing all too fast (just like most of them did where I live a few decades ago). Your picture shows their beauty - especially the light is very well managed.
Support your local shop!

I'm glad they are still keeping soeme of these amazing old stores. So many details we have here, and so different from the new supermarkets.Good pov, light and sharpness.
