The Uyghur people are one of the biggest ethnic minorities in China. They are a Turkic people and live primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, in the far west of China. There are diasporic communities in Pakistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, etcetera.
The village of Tuyoq, about 50km outside of Turpan, is considered an Islamic holy site within China. People live in mud brick houses much the same now as they did hundreds of years ago. It's nestled in the middle of the lush Tuyoq Valley, an oasis within the Taklamakan Desert.
In 1998 I made my first China trip and fell in love with the country and the people(s). It was there and then that I also found out a thing or two about the difference between travel photography and holiday snapshots.
This picture is where it all started for me. It was taken with my first half decent camera (a Pentax Espio). I know the scan is not perfect, but I still like it. Obviously I'm not very objective here! I'm curious to see what you think of it.
Thanks to litiancai for reminding me. |

Hi Benny,
I can see how this would be a special shot for you, it's great because there is a clear tenderness between mother and son. Her attention is on her son, and his attention is on you.
I'm still waiting for my first shot like this. You've inspired me to want to photography people more! I'm going to Qinghai Province in a month, so I'll try there. If I can get one shot 80% this good I will be happy. Thanks for sharing
Regards
Lee
