This is the second picture in my series of portraits from the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Region.

The Yi people are an ethnic group in China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Numbering 8 million, they are the seventh largest of the 55 minor ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. They live primarily in rural areas of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi, usually in mountainous regions.

The Yi speak a Tibeto-Burman language and have their own script. As animists, Yi worship the spirits of ancestors, hills, trees, rocks, water, earth, sky, wind, and forests, but their religion also includes elements from Daoism, shamanism and fetishism

Traditional Yi society was based upon four castes, with the lowest being slaves and the highest rank determined by blood lineage only. In the Liangshan Mountains this system lasted till 1949.

My Yi pictures were taken in the Yi Autonomous Region in southern Sichuan. This old lady is cleaning green vegetables in front of her adobe dwelling in the hills, just a short walk up from Puge. She didn't mind having her picture taken, but did feel a bit awkward about it, so I took only one shot and walked on.

analogue picture scanned, no PP, only framed

Privet, Benny,
Very interesting note! Good shot! I never been in this region of China. TFS!

Greetings from West Ural,

Oh, my gosh, Benny,
a scanned photo with NO post processing?? Oh, this is just wonderful! The light and color are just awesome and the detail is superb. I love the blue of her clothing in contrast to the warmer colored walls. Excellently composed, too. Fantastic job! Many thanks and kindest wishes,
Shelly

Hi Benny-

I love slice of life images. You have a nice one here.

Its hard to tell in this scan, but I believe it is a little soft, and the colors are muted. Its hard to get a good scan from a photo. However, you did a good job.

I have a W/S of some PP is you're interested. Just my interpretation really.

Nice post, and great note!

~Vic~

Hi Benny. Excellent portray with a lots of detail, especially on the woman's face. I love Sichuan but I had never heard about 'Puge', nor the Yi minority. Thanks for sharing your knowledge about those people. Tibo

Salut Benny,
C'est une superbe scène de vie que tu nous montres. Les couleurs sont belles et la petite vieille à l'air plus âgée que les bâtiments. La vie a laissé ses traces et l'image est là pour les immortaliser.
Amitiés
Marc

Lovely shot, Benny. I like the contrast between her blue dress and the adobe wall, and the other visible detail in the shot (a stove in the wall)? All your Yi photos are excellent. Well done!

Ryno

benny

wonderful image. The old woman is nicely put in the compo, the different colors of the walls, the deep window and other details adds more interest to this compo, we can feel the soul of the place and the sad concentration of the woman in her work

Hi Benny,
Your Chinese gallery is amazing. This, in particular, is a gem. Love the contrasting colours between her blue dress and the light ochre adobe dwelling. Love the moment you have caught to portrait her.
Excellent image.
Regards,
Maria
