Silkroad travels: Ürümqi

Ürümqi seen from the Yamalik mountains. As the capital of Xinjiang province is a river oasis, situated in a bone dry area, bordering to the Gurbantüngütt shamo (=Tsungarian desert-steppe) and the Tien shan foothills it is subject to occasional dusty winds. In a great effort to keep the dust from leaving the ground the province government organizes massive reforestation measures around the city, with local tree species including wild apple. The trees need all the help they can get for growing. In the foreground you see a water sprinkler head! I don't know whether the trees will be able to survive when the water is cut. By the way: the modern office building where the State Department responsible for reforestation is seated, proudly exhibits flower pots outside every office window.

Lieber Dieter,
This photo is very nicely framed.
It's also very interesing to see that in China there is also environmental concern.
Cheers,
F

Hallo Dieter!
