Photographer’s Note
A statue of QinShiHuangDi, in the forecourt of the Xian Terracotta Warriors carpark. He is the emperor responsible for construction of the terracotta warrior army.
From Wikipedia:
"First Qin Emperor (Chinese: 秦始皇陵; pinyin: Qín Shǐhuáng líng).
The unification of China in 221 BC under the First Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi (or Shih Hwang-Tih) marked the beginning of Imperial China, a period which lasted until the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912. The Qin Dynasty left a legacy of a centralized and bureaucratic state that would be carried onto successive dynasties. At the height of its power, the Qin Dynasty had a population of about 40 million people."

Hello Chris,
A good capture of this statue of the world famous philosopher. I like the close framing and upwards point of view, which emphasises the mass of the statue. Very good colours and clarity.

Bonjour, mon ami Chris,
Je ne cherche pas à connaître les réponses, je cherche à comprendre les questions.
[Confucius]
Philosophe souvent cité ! Un personnage connu du monde entier.
Merci, Chris, de nous le présenter d'une aussi belle façon.
Amitiés.

Hi Chris
very nice pic here, love the angle you've got here, the frame is very well proportioned and you've got him looking proud and majestic. lighting wasnt bad considering the skies.
but sorry to tell you that he's not Confucious, but the first emperor QinShiHuangDi, the one who had the terracotta army built. His name's inscribed underneath and also...Confucious would not carry a sword or have a crown ;) Hope this info helps.
Cheers

Hello Chris,
This image appeared in the random order in which you've selected for your Intro page, and immediately attracted my attention. While visiting a museum store in Tianjin twenty five years ago, I bought a pair of porcelain statues, the large one is modeled after this statue, which I now see is that of Qin Shi Huangdi, the First (yellow) Qin Emperor. I had been giving lectures on Chinese archaeology, and of course the extraordinary tomb with the pottery army had already been known. It's always interesting to connect dates with what was going on elsewhere. While Qin Shi Huangdi was trying to unify the different city states in East Asia, the Punic Wars were being waged between the Romans and the Carthaginians In Europe. (Archimedes, the great scientist/mathematician, was killed in one of the Punic Wars in 212 BC). Thanks for the excellent note accompanying the excellent photograph.
Have a good weekend,
Bulent
