I like flower gardens certainly with a lot different flowers as well as here.
A pity for all the people during the earthquake but you took a very lovely picture from this symbolic keepsake, very well done.

I'm sorry if I seem to be rather hypercritical here, especially as you have received so many wonderful comments from other members. But frankly, I just don't get it.

This photograph doesn't command my attention or communicate any feeling. Your notes helped a lot of course, but without them, this shot would have been meaningless to me.

My main criticism is that there is no unity here. There is nothing that I can see that gives this picture some sort of order (to all or even to some of the elements here). Nothing, I can see here contributes to a unified aesthetic effect when I try to look at this image as a whole.

What I see here is chaos; there are just too many conflicting elements here. The flowers are quite lovely and the reds and yellows compliment one another very well but they lack sharpness and texture.

And then beyond this we have a miscellany of sculptured trees that should, at least have provided some sort of balance to the scene. But they don't.

And finally, there is that background, that gray sky and that ugly construction site. It’s too overpowering and distracting and when I let my eye scan this picture it always stops on that construction site, because it is the most dominant feature of this photograph and therefore becomes my point of interest.

I do apologize for my bluntness and I sincerely hope that you are not offended by this critique. Clearly, there will be many who will want disagree with me and that of course, is there prerogative.

But when I read comments like, good composition and interesting colours, great view, great sharpness, good POV and framing. I have to ask myself what is it that I cannot see in this photograph.

Hello Chris,

I find this quite a dynamic shot. There is certainly a communist feel about it, but with the sickle and hammer looming I suppose that is stating the obvious. I like the faded background board with the large characters written on it, and the strange topiary structures on the right side. My only criticism is that that strange tower-like thing on the right and the palm under it be either fully included or totally omitted. I think the hazy skies help turn the focus to the plants in the FG. Certainly a good deal of history, so thanks for the detailed note. Well seen and captured.

Hello Chris,

Resplendant colors mask the tragedy that the site memorializes (but didn't you mean 260,000 instead of 26,000 lives lost in Tianjin). I remember the earthquake well, and in 1983 when I visited that somber memory was omnipresent. Great shot, Chris. Have a good week,

Hi Chris,
That beautiful colours and the shapes of the garden and the communist logo enabled you a eye catching tidy compo, despite the ugly sky and bg. Anyway, the building is really there and one of the things that we appreciate in TE is "knowing about the world", so that doesn't reach the point of being a flaw.

Bonjour Chris,
une belle photo su le plan des couleurs, mais je trouve qu'elle manque vraiment de netteté au premier plan, dans les fleurs.
Le sujet est interessant, les fleurs, c'est ce qui manque dans certaines villes, surtout en dehors des mémoriaux.
Bel hommage aux victimes.

The FG is colourful thanks to the flowers. Interesting shapes in the BG. The contrast with the dull grey BG is strong. The building in the BG is an eyesore, but little you could do about it. Nice work!

Beautiful with all those flowers! Lovely colours! But such a sad history about that terrible earthquake. Good that you remind about how unsafe the earth is, with or without human violence. Nature is not trustable either.
