| A traditional structure at the Six Banyan Tree Temple in Guangzhou. The temple's origins are ancient; the first structures on the site were constructed in 537 during the Liang dynasty by Master Xiao Yu. The temple has had several names, including "Precious Solemnity Temple," "Purificatory Wisdom Temple," and Changshou (Longevity) Temple, but its current name of "Six Banyan Trees" or Liu Rong was penned by Su Dongpo, a famous poet who visited the site in the 12th century. It was rebuilt after a devastating fire during the Northern Song Dynasty. It was rebuilt again in 1373 after another fire in the early Ming Dynasty. The complex, which includes various smaller shrines, libraries and a grand hall also features a 170 ft. high, 9-tiered pagoda, built in 1097. The temple is also home to three giant Buddha images constructed in 1663; each is almost 20 ft. high. |
