Photographer’s Note

This photo is taken inside the Peak Tower on the famous Victoria Peak, Hong Kong Island. The Peak Tower is a seven storey, anvil-shaped building located above the upper terminus of the Peak Tram and containing shops, restaurants, attractions and several viewing decks for looking out over the magnificent city skyline below.

I had been up to the top deck to take the obligatory skyline shots as the sun descended and the buildings started to light up and on my way back down the escalators to the tram I was intrigued by the reflections in the glass.

Incidentally, the tall building in the centre with the column of big white neon X's is the controversial Bank of China Tower (3rd tallest in HK). It was completed in 1990 and is controversial because many local people see the tower as a huge violation of the principles of feng shui. For example the 4 triangular prisms are negative symbols in the feng shui rule book; being the opposite to circles which represent perfection and (importantly in a bank) prosperity. Also, the huge crosses on the sides suggest negativity and its shape has been likened to a praying mantis (a threatening symbol), complete with radio masts as antennae.

I had to change the ISO to 1600 and shoot at 1/20 second in order to get something hand-held. Does anyone else still feel amazed when they view their images on a computer afterwards and realise how little noise you get from a 1600 ISO setting on these latest DSLR's! :)

Full-frame shot, no cropping. Frame added only, otherwise unchanged.

Regards,

Rich
