Chengdu is about halfway between Shanghai and Mt Everest, the highest mountain. It is the fifth largest city in China with around 8 million residents. On this day the air was quite polluted with a mix of smog and fog. This shows some of the public buildings in this capital city of the most populated province in China, Sichuan.

The territory of the province and its vicinity were the cradle of unique local civilizations, which can be dated back to at least the fifteenth century BC (i.e. the later years of Shang Dynasty). Beginning from the ninth century BC, Shu (today Chengdu) and Ba (today Chongqing City) emerged as cultural and administrative centers where two rival kingdoms were established.

Shu's existence was unknown until an archaeological discovery in 1986 at a small village named Sanxingdui (三星堆 Sān Xīng Duī) in Guanghan County. It is believed to be an ancient city of the Shu Kingdom, where excavations have yielded invaluable archaeological information.

Although the Qin Dynasty happened to destroy the civilizations of Shu and Ba, their cultures were preserved and inherited by people in Sichuan until today. The Qin government accelerated the technological and agricultural advancements of Sichuan making it comparable to that of the Huang He (Yellow River) Valley. The Dujiangyan Irrigation System, built in the 3rd century BC under the inspection of Li Bing, was the symbol of modernization of that period. Composed of a series of dams, it redirected the flow of the Min Jiang, a major tributary of the Yangtze River, to fields, relieving the damage of seasonal floods. The construction and various other projects greatly increased the harvest of the area which thus became the main source of provision and men for Qin's unification of China.

Nice large city. The palace in the foreground is an excellent focal point in the image. It does create a nice contrast with its bright colours against the greyish tones of the background. Good view of the city and note. Thanks Murray.

Roberto

You had a realy great spot for a very nice picture. Did you get one of the new square? It's nice to see the city like this, thanks for the nice shot.

Hello Murray,
An interesting documentary of China's economic wonder, both in a positive and negative way!
Modern cities but covered with polluted air...
Good point of view and fine details in spite of smog!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Murray

An expansive overview of the city, with good sharpness. I remember the big Mao statue in the fg, when I visited Chengdu in 2002. The yellow ochre colour of the building behind it really stands out. Tfs!

Hi Murray,
Good, sharp overview of the city center. What I like most is the contrast provided by the building when everything else is devoid of color.
Best wishes,
Hakan

Hi Murray,

A good POV of the city center of Chengdu, the photo has a good composition, DOF and nice colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Hello Murray,

Highly informative note, for which I am grateful. I've seen photos of Chengdu before, but your vantage point is entirely new for me. No doubt some of the events of the next Olympic Games will take place in the stadium visible in the upper right. Warm regards,
bulent

The most curious thing is to see one single car on that large avenue. The austere looking buildings are well representative of the old regime and the modern city behind shows well the turn around of China occurred some years ago. Well done.

Hello MurraY!
You have chosen again a very good pov for your panorama. The inclusion of the stadium is a good contrast in the architectural forms. Although there is a good contrast between the Maoist monumental architecture and the modern functional architecture of the sky scrapers.
Anton

Murray: for scope and novel composition high marks here. You had a great POV... regards, c

This is my City and I'm proud of it as a citizen. But I don't think you know much about my city in the modern way. For example, the tower in Chengdu is the 7th of the highest towers in the world. It's even taller than Eiffel tower! Do you know this? If you are going to this city again, I can be your guide. By-the-way, the Women's FIFA World Cup's gonna be held in Chengdu. Wanna watch it?
