Enough of the soulful older men and younger men....

Following on from yesterday's pic my ....right hand drinking companion... was an artist who somehow found me perpetually amusing - thankfully not too many drinking challenges in her direction but she was good fun to meet. Bless her too - she thought I was 'beautiful and strong for my age!' Why do i never get this in the UK? On the other hand someone could have been winding me up in the translation!

This is an image born out of far more darkness than the light on her face suggests - it's pulled back from oblivion - I love the surface texture - particularly with this subject but I know it won't be the cup of tea of many - particularly those who carry tripods everywhere.......different end games perhaps......

I'm not quite certain if she lives and works at the Heavenly Arts Village or the Blue House Arts Village in Chengdu - we met so many artists in a couple of days and I'm not sure we met at either of those places.....anyway both set ups were very interesting...one is literally a new build, studio living space project for younger artists supported by a very supportive and entrepeneurial Chinese restuaranteur. The other has been established by artists a little way of of town in a set of old low rise factory buildings. It was great to see such space given over to these artists....more about them with later pics.

Just share a moment with this delightful person and you can sense the fun of our little street gathering!

Extraordinary collection of characters, or should I say souls, day after day. Not only you reached for them far into darkness, but it also seems you've brought to light the best in them and the best in your photography. I'm definitely staying with you in this series, in this story, in their stories.

Hi Kev, so are you back, or posting from there?

Fine portrait and strange expression. Sounds like a fascinating trip, we'll have to catch up sometime.

I'm with Gal allthe way here, Kev, what a ively, vibrant bunch of gipsies and bohemians you've captured here - expressive too (by my own JP standards...)
Terrific shot of this woman, almost 3D in its intensity. Great series!

Francis

Hi Kev
with the sensor of your 5D you have eyes in the night. The face of this woman have a strange expression. i like the contrast and the cropping.
Beautifull portratit in the night

Hello Kev,

I like the expression of this woman, certainly the eyes are extraordinarily, the light and colours are nice! Thanks for sharing.

Regards,
John.

Bonjour, Kev,
Voilà un portrait qui rappelle dans son style les photos argentiques avec le grain apparent. Une façon très originale de cadrer et de présenter avec un style très attrayant.
Amitiés.
Philippe

It's really amazing what you can pull out from all this darkness. I guess you have the gift to give light to all your subjects and provide them with a very special human luminosity. You really reach the soul of the person behind the camera and that's why your portraits are always so good. But then there is always that on the edge 5D metering that you use so well to produce such striking photos. The light in her face here is amazing. Specially the reflective/wet areas of her skin. She looks like a lollipop glowing close to the eyes of a kid. It's a brilliant photo.

another stunning piece of portraiture, kev...
you really grew up to that chinese trip, my friend...this is like a desert all of your previous works which, with all due respect, look like a training session before this chinese "real thing"...

Hi Kev,
i like very much this portrait,a lot of emotion came out of this image ,
even with this imposible light , colors and texture are amazing and gives a feeling of an old detective story.
congratulation for frozing such a moment !

Tom

Its great to see you getting portraits of the various people you meet along your trip Kev, something I lack in my photography. A great expression, and one that mixes it up a little as you mention in your note.

I missed quite a bit didn't I? I was quite reluctant during my time in India, to delve too deep into people's work, as I was so obsessed my own. I'm not sure if its a good or a bad thing that I didn't. I feel like I have lost whatever ability I had to write a decent critique!

I like it Kev, she looks like a very sweet person..a rather cheeky smile with such an inviting face.

I will try to catch up...slowly...
