Looking through prayer flags at the Mingyong Glacier at the foot of Kawagebo Peak in the Meili Snow Mountain Range. The glacier runs from 5,500 metres down to 2,700 metres and is the lowest glacier in China.
Kawagebo (6,740 metres) is one of the eight sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism. It remains a virgin peak. Since the first effort was made by a British climbing team in 1902, all attempts to scale the mountain have failed. A joint effort by Chinese and Japanese climbers to reach the summit in 1991 ended in tragedy when 17 members of the party were killed in an avalanche. 16 bodies have been recovered, the first in 1998, the glacier slowly giving them up. When visiting, we struck up a conversation with a Japanese gentleman and it turned out that he was a member of the ill-fated climbing team. He comes back as often as he can to honour those that lost their lives. |
