Misty Li river Photo

Photographer’s Note

This shot was taken before early in the morning, while doing the famous Li river cruise, in southeast of China, about 40 minutes upriver from Xingping, a town near Yangshuo, on the way to Guilin.

I belleive that these boats carry people along the river, everyday, but I'm not sure.
Most of the month that I spent in China, the sky was mostly like this, which could also provide nice atmospheres and filter a bit the light. I'm a color person, but I made a b/w version to compare, in WS.

We've had to wait a while for a new post from you Ricardo. This is a real beauty and the misty atmosphere makes the white sky appropriate; it would look very odd if it was blue. The mist also helps to separate all the layers of mountains
I love the composition. The ripples from the wake lead right up to the boat (obviously - doh!) and then the boat points the way into the rest of the frame along the reflections. The light is giving the water a silky sheen that is very attractive. It reminds me very much of Laos.
You know I'm a colour person too, but the B&W is a viable option and I quite like that too. The muted colours though are very appealing in the main version, so imo you made the right choice. (Some people seem to think that B&W is the way to go if the sky is poor and sometimes that works - sorry - thinking aloud and rambling)

So that's Guangxi? I'd love to visit that place. The mist provides excellent atmosphere with your pic and you've placed the boat well off centre. I actually prefer the BW as it gives a timeless feel and the colours aren't too special here. Good shot.

The mist over the water gives this shot a very peaceful feel, an effect reinforced by the still water which is only disturbed by the wake of the boat.
The composition is good; the eye tends to follow the direction of travel of the boat towards the distant mountains.

The scanned photograph is fantastic…The layers of the mountains visible through the misty atmosphere makes excellent viewing. I wouldn’t mind the sky because the mist around would make the sky like it is in the photo. This is excellent compo. my friend. I like how the waves lead us to the boat creating them. The photograph has an overall soft sheen which is beautiful.

Mountains and mist make great shooting partners. What I like about such photos is the gradiation the mist produces. Each successive mountain is a bit less visible. here such a stepping effect is clearly well used and the boat, the boat. Thats the best part. That single person travelling on that old boat into that mist. A nature shot that tells a story.

As misty as in the Jason's legend towards Hercules columns.. This one evocates this for me. The picture is composed as symply as possible and the convergence to the pass is great in the boat direction.
A good one in difficult conditions for the light, but here is a good quality

el ambiente misterioso de esta imagen con la neblina es muy agradable. La barca navegando por este río y dejando una bonita estela, dirigiéndose hacia la V del valle que cierra al fondo, crea una escena dinámica. Parece que el cielo, las montañas y el agua se fundan.
Me gusta cómo sólo se pueden ver los colores en el primer plano, y cómo se van difuminando mientras la mirada se aleja hacia el horizonte.
Buena calidad de escaneado, también.

Looks like the Fjords on Sweeden, nice and peacelully. Even the fog is there this is not a problem you cna see perfectly the boat and the mountais and makes it a mistery thinking what is beyod this point.

Engraçado, abri esta foto só pela beleza que mostra, sem notar que era tua. Depois ao ler a nota é que vi quem era o autor. Está linda e apresenta todo o misticismo do oriente. Para ser franco, ainda hesito em saber qual é que gosto mais. Acho o trabalho a P&B excepcional e estou verdadeiramente tentado a dizer que é melhor do que a versão a cores. Parabéns.

Olá Ricardo,

A composicáo e exposicáo sao muito boas; e a bruma faz com que a imagem tenha una profundeza muito especial.

Por outra parte, a imagem transmite una forte sensacáo de tranquilidade.

Gosto muito tambén da versáo preto e branco, mais penso que um pouco menos de luz podería le dar mais forza.

The POV is everything here, as you captured the wake and hence the dynamic action of the boat just in front of you, and the viewer almost has the sensation of rollicking along for the ride...I like the soft hues here, the strong and solid bank of trees on the left, and then the misty scene in the distance. Very well captured and a superb scanning job. Cheers.

I like the atmosphere of this picture, but it is an inspiration because I'll be leaving for China in 2 weeks. I have studied a bit the situation in Guilin and the river cruise alon the Li River, and I am not sure about " when and what and how " when it comes to good pictures of a place that has been pictured a million times.

me a few tips about GUILIN. The tour takes us on a tour down river, but what about before and after ? Any tips at dawn at Guilin , like "go to the river quay at.... near... park" ? Or

I'm not sure I remember well, but I think the first photos of you that I noticed were those of China. The one that comes to my mind is "Yangshuo panoramic river view". This is one of the places I would like to see with my own eyes. But, with your photos, I can have a glimpse of what it is. At least, your vision of it. Nice, misty colors. I can almost feel the water. The inclusion of the boat was a must. Not only for the nice effects on the water (the ripples) but also because it gives another feel of that quiet (so it seems) place.

Que tal como va todo??? Hace dias que no cuelgas ningua foto y se echa de menos.
Pero a lo que vamos, lo que más me gusta de esta foto sin duda es la atmosfera que consigues. Ese cierto misticismo con la niebla no hace ver pensar que te estabas adentrando en un misterioso lugar. Me gusta mucho la definición del baile del agua y la composición.

não vou dizer que gostei desta névoa azulada, mas não ficou mal aqui, gostoi das linhas da montanha, do caminho feito pelo rio e pela presença do barco e seu senso de movimento. ficou bonito o resultado
