This was taken while hiking up the Aq Kol Bai Yang Gou Canyon located in the TianShan Mt. range, about 2 hrs outside of Urumqi. We had stopped to rest about 3/4 of the way up the canyon when we met this very friendly Kazak family setting up their yurt. I believe this is the Grandfather and his grandaughter or great-grandaughter. He was chipping the bark off the log that was going to be used as one of the center poles in the yurt. I loved watching him show/teach the little girl how to do it. I feel this captures a little of the tenderness of the moment.
Kazaks are one of the 55 recognized minority groups in China. They live in yurts, usually up in the mountains, raising goats or sheep. They are a very friendly and open people who love to offer their hospitality to anyone who might need it. This family offered to let us eat with them even though they were very busy trying to finishthe outside of the yurt before night.
**Any advice on shooting portraits and/or color clarity and sharpness would be MUCH appreciated**
