Photographer’s Note

This photo was taken at the promenade at Lei King Wan on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island.

I just found this photo today while going through my old Olympus C-730 albums. I had never viewed it before.

Do you ever take so many photos, that you never actually view them all in detail?

I miss my old camera which smashed on the floor. The 10x zoom could take these shots - as the fishing boats are normally in the center of the harbour.

The residential buildings in the background are on the Kowloon side.

Tech: Auto level in Photoshop. Resized, sharpened and added border.

Hi Andrew,
Good compo with the little old fashioned boat and concrete apartments + nice framing.
I won't say this is a 'lovely' picture because I don't like the imposition of the buildings in background. But it's an excellent portrayal of Hong Kong's sometimes monotonous city life with these concrete estates. And that heat & pollution during Summer time is unbearable :(

Hi Andrew, wonderful shot. a typical one from HK! excellent composition with that wall of towers on the bacgrounds and the small boat on the foreground.

Hi Andrew,

Good sharpness front to back. The containers and highrise is very HK. I hope I don't offend you but this is a shot that I, composition wise, also would have made. Some of the style is similar. Not only composition but also subjects. Keep it up! Gilbert

I like the contrast between the boat and the bright buildings on the Kowloon side. The buildings are a bit overexposed but this is actually great in this case as it adds real atmosphere and deepens the contrast between light and shadow which enhances the impact. Great composition and impressive scale.

Hi Andrew,

this is quite good. A nice juxtaposition of old and new, made even more stark by the unattractiveness of the new. Or perhaps a juxtaposition of rich and poor. In any case a dynamic shot of contrasts in modern China. A country that perhaps best exemplifies the contrasts between rich and poor, old and new. A bit of a shame that the back is a bit hazy. In any even, I really like this work. Kudos.

Amazing view of the famous HK skycrapers, Andrew. The fishermans boat gives us a nice scale, and I also like the harbor and the pile of containers behind - for me, it is a very HK scene, and it is very well captured. Well done, have a great w/e.

You placing more see pictures out of this region, I remember other image in the harbor of Hong Kong with the fantastic skyscrapers in background, it's a very lovely picture through the fisher boat in foreground and the small yellow boat beside.

Hi Andrew, what most hit me is the striking cnotrast between "progress" (or what someone think it may be) and "tradition". Maybe globalization vs. localization?
It seems a lost war among a too small fisherman against a growing city which is too big and cahotic for him.
A really National Geographic-style shot.

A fine entry into your classical series, Andrew. Good array of industrial and residential patterns in the background, also slightly set off by the haze, and nice foreground interest provided by the crisp and colorful fishing boat (which is also an element of traditional vs modern). Interesting shot, good that you found it.

Good thing to recover the old photos. Now I am in the process of scanning all my old ones and I am finding real treasures.
The contrast between the peaceful fishing and the stressing mass of buildings is very beautiful, reinforced by the contrast in the colours.

Beautiful contrast between the boat and the background, great idea and beautiful image, compliments, I would have only cut the high part of the buildings in order to give the infinite feeling at the background.

What a wonderful contrast in this one. Huge wall of uniform buildings accompanied with cranes and containers. And then there's two small boats and relaxed life. Background haze makes the city look like being from totally another world.

I come from a country where a family lives in a home, surrounded with trees and the next home or neighbor, is a minute walk away. A village could be a few square kilometers. To think and imagine, a whole village could reside in a building.

Thank you ....because from your fhoto communicate with China and you.This foto it was too expensive presence.Draw a conclusion for the back plan ,looking the fisherman were the first appearance shot, pretty boats ,colours.. and Auto level in from Fhotoshop ..Bravo..
