Photographer’s Note
To get some foreground and diagonals into the shot I had to climb a little bit but eventually found this position with the stupas in a line, drawing the eye in towards the hill where the wall then takes over, leading up to the fortress itself atop the hill.

Hi Phil, I love this composition. The first stupa blocks off the ugly details (streets, stores, etc) in front of the Palace, which are included in most shots I've seen.
This is well worth your climb!

That's the highlight of my trip to Tibet ;) A somewhat unusual approach to take the picture but I like your idea. Those colours you generated (on film) are very nice and adds old feeling to picture. Good details - ie the bicycle... I took a picture at the same place but with a different perspective. Click here to see.

Now I have understood why did you mention to have something good in the foreground in front of the valley view (Leh)in one of my pictures. Good POV & lovely composition.
