Our journey to Tibet started in Beijing, where we arrived after our flight from Europe. We arrived in the morning and would take a flight to Lhasa the next morning, so we had one day to spend in the capital of China. As we already paid a multi-day-visit to Beijing a couple of years ago (see my travelogue of China 2000), we decided to take it easy and relax instead of rushing through the city to see as much as possible.

We went to the Tiantian park: the park of the Temple of Heaven. The main and most beautiful building - the "Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest" - was under renovation. The Chinese government is renovating almost every important building, because of the Olympic Games that will take place in Beijing in 2008. So we were not able to take good pictures of this wonderful piece of ancient Chinese architecture. We decided to go to another part of the park, where the "Palace of Abstinence" is located. In this palace the emperor prepared himself for the rituals of prayer and worship, by abstaining for one full day of food, sleep and - most importantly - women. The palace has green roofs, two of which are visible in the picture.

great roof detail in this photo, the little circles at the ends are great
the simplicity of your photo speaks to the austerity of the preparation about wich you write.

really like the sharpness of the first roof and the 2nd roof used as a background, nice framing too

Hi Michael.
Good view bit a litle bit tilted. This shot show well rhe chinese style for classic roofs. The color og this one is not common.
Well done
JP

It’s a surprising follow up to the pervious picture,Michael

I like the way you captured this old looking roof with all its history in such graphical almost abstract way with the nice shadows and different shades of green.

Good work with this shot. I tried a number of times to get a worthwhile shot of a traditional Chinese roof... but failed miserably every time.
Interesting choice of tile colour (I find yellow a little boring myself) and great DoF.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Michael,
I love old chinese roofs.
Kind regards,
Roland

A really interesting description of your journey and this place Michael - the graphic simplicity of this green image is really nice - it's rare to see an image like this - the shadows at the front end of the image are really nice.

best wishes Kev

Hiya Michael,
Very good result of your sharp eye! Well spotted, mate!
I like your DOF, colours and the way you cropped it - transitions in line and colours are very interesting and the compo enhanced by green branches hanging from both sides.

Hi Michael. A beautiful detail photo on the roofs of this palace, that does a fine job of illustrating the art and craftsmanship on this piece of architecture. I like how the semi-shallow DOF together with the way in which the light falls into the frame enhance the foreground roof a bit more. The branches, unavoidable as they probably were, provide a welcome contrasting natural element that conveniently comes in another hue of this frame's main color. Nice.

Hi Michael,
Interesting detail shot of this beautiful architecture.I like the graphism and the rhytm of the textures and patterns. The limited range of colors is supporting the composition.
Greetings,
hermann

Hi Michael - simple but effective, the oriental graphism is strong and distinct, and the trees make a nice frame, excellent crop.
