Big Dragon Waterfall Photo

Photographer’s Note

One of the first photos I took on my trip to China last year. Taken at Yandangshan park, Yueqing county, Wenzhou city in Zhejiang province.

A truly stunning waterfall, I took the photo in colour originally but decided it looked more dramatic in black and white.

The white sky is a bit of a disappointment and looking back (with a little (but not much) more knowledge of photography) the image is a little overexposed with the trees and bushes around the top looking a little "wispy".

If I were to take this photo again (which I hope to in a week or so!) I would try and do it much the same. Maybe try waiting until there is a little less light for some nice shadows, but definitely not extending the exposure time -- I think the water works well as it is, possibly showing some amount of "force".

I'm interested to hear what other people have got to say and what other things I could try when I re-visit the fall soon.

Beautifull scenery, hopefully next time you go there the light condition will be favourable (early or late in the day, early morning with some fog etc). Nice option could be to have shadows diagonally cutting across the image.

The most important thing here is to bracket and blend exposures, I don't believe single photo will be a complete success here, bring a tripod, if you don't feel like carrying extra weight then just get a small table tripod and place it on the rocks or something.

If you want to visit a good gallery with this sort of images go to www.starvingphotographer.com. His landscapes are breathtaking, and he combines multiple exposures in most of the images to get the results (yes, he owns $10,000 camera, but that's beyond the point).

Your image is well composed but lacks technically because you had to have the lens wide open to get higher shutter speed, and too much blown highlights and detailes shadows. Tripod will solve the problem.
