Rural industry (Township Enterprise) in Jiangsu Province. Thin rolls of soft wood are hand fed into a cutting machine to make popsicle sticks, which are collected into baskets and hand sorted. Over a decade ago this enterprise was one of several in an area of rural economic growth.

Pretty nice scan Robin. And also, it seems to me you handled the light very well, as the white light coming from the door entrance is not washing off, but provides a natural light into the room, so that your flash work (i believe you had to use one) is unconspicous.

This soft, natural light diffusion, and your adequate frame help make this workplace, and convey an atmosphere of busy-ness, but still somewhat relaxed.

I also like the movements of the workers, which seem to underline the skills involved more than any sweat-shop atmosphere. Very pleasant.

There's a lot of energy in this photo with the strips of wood moving through the machine and motion blur in all the right places. The colors and textures are also very well rendered through this slide scan. The three people surround the machine well. Though perhaps having all of the left side person might have been nice but it's not bad. And probably not possible to back up more to get it all. But you still did an excellent job capturing the scene and busy atmosphere. And even the tedium involved in this labor.
