Cave dwellings in the Loess Plateau in China's north have been very popular. It is called yaodong in Chinese. Its history can go back centuries. They are generally carved out of a hillside. This cave dwelling complex was built a hundred years ago. Its layout is similar to siheyuan, Chinese quadrangles with houses on the four sides of a courtyard.
