The Longji terraces area is famous for the excessively large number of terraced rice paddy fields on its mountain, which have created an intricate pattern on the hillsides. Set amongst the villages of the minorities Zhuang and Yao, the area allows for easy to moderate walking/hiking possibilities along and up hillsides to view the panoramas of the terraced rice fields, as well as glimpse the rural life and style of architecture found in the forest-fringed villages.
Longji means 'Dragon Backed Mountain'. When the paddies are full of water in spring, it is said to resemble the scales on the back of a dragon. The fields are beautiful all year round, in the early stages when filled with water, and as the rice grows and matures, changing colours as it does so. Winter may also see snow. Rape flowers are also to be seen in some parts and in some seasons, and along the journey here, there is forest-clad steep-sloped mountain scenery to be taken in.
Longsheng is home to four minority nationalities: Miao, Yao, Dong and Zhuang. The Yao and Zhuang nationalities live in Longji. The Yao have distinctive clothing and hair styles which set them apart from other ethnic groups. Yao women are famous for having the longest hair in the world. They never cut their hair. Instead they wrap the hair in a bun on top of their head in a style resembling an Indian turban.
We spent the whole day in Longji walking around the terraces and although the weather was a little bit foggy I managed to take couple of photos. It was however a shame that the wide panorama picture was out of question because of the lack of visibility in the valley.
Another view of the valley I have posted few pictures before.

Hello Kamila - it seems we've seen a lot of photos of these terraces, or ones like them, recently. And that's certainly not a complaint, as they're amazing and wonderful photography subjects. Shooting them in less than ideal weather has worked beautifully here; the diffused light really brings out the colors, while the rain has created a wet glow to the FG. The house itself is perfectly placed as well. I imagine you never run out of good perspectives in a place like this, but the one you chose here is excellent!
ktanska (28729) 2014-03-16 6:20
Excellent view of those terrace fields on steep mountain slopes. The foreground clearly shows how water is essential for rice and how important it is to maintain those terraces. That must be even more hard work over there than on flatlands.
photoray (13981) 2014-03-16 7:15
Attractive Longji rice terrace scene, revealing the stubble up close then the plants flowing and following the hilly contours, every inch of Earth being utilized.
Subdued light enhances the resolution and natural colors.
Nicely created and composed,

I love the great POV, you have accomplished these beautiful rice fields, with the first plane where we clearly see the elevations to hold water and plant stumps, perfect whimsical curved shapes that are doing the plots, even to the top of the hills, the house on the corner is an exquisite touch to a very attractive composition.
Magnificent this range of soft colors.
Very well run sharpness and optimum sharpness.
Well done. I love it.
Have a nice Sunday.

L'image est édifiante et très intéressante.
Félicitations pour cette très belle prise de vue.

Another one of your fascinating Chinese views. This is a wonderful rural environment and a well composed photo with the diagonal lines of the fields in the fg and the rounded shapes of the terraces in the bg. The brownish tones actually remind me of some of my old scans where I didn't manage to find the correct colours, or the colours had faded, but in this case I am convinced these are the natural colours on this grey day in winter.
ikeharel (76145) 2014-03-16 9:48
Beautiful captured the rice-fields terraces, from the closet in the FG, and to the far hills beyond.
An irrigation system that worked effectivly for centuries, inspie of what looks as an ancient technique.
Fine shot, good DOF and clarity.
Have a nice week ahead,

capturing rice fields in China is on everyone's photo list i think :)
you may not have been able to capture your wide angle shot you wanted, but hey...that just gives you an excellent excuse to go back again :)
love that you included the building on the right, gives scale and something to relate too as well.
I think the damp looking atmosphere worked well.

The Longji terraces are world famous. One day I also like to go there.
We have already seen many pictures of the terraces and none from all images is ever boring.
But I believe it's the first time that I see them in these colours. The brown tones make the sight really special.
An excellent composition with the lines of the terrace boundaries running in all directions.
Good inclusion of the house just in front of the deep.
Best regards, Paul

a fascinating shot this. I love the way you have composed it so that we get a real idea of the setting and obvious industry that must go into cultivating and harvesting this crop. Glorious detail and eye-catching curves. An amazing image, I love it.
Have a good week - B.
SnapRJW (31629) 2014-03-17 3:57
Hello Kamila - What I particularly like about this shot is the fact that you have included a close view of the harvest rice plants in the FG. This aspect gives a very good idea of how the plants are placed in the terraces and makes a good counterpoint to the more distant view. Beautifully managed and even the dull weather doesn't detract from this attractive scene.
Warm regards Rosemary

This place is really magical, the y the land has Ben manipulated for farming like this is incredible. You have chosen a really fine view here.and composed the scene in a magical way. I find it really hard to make a photo with no sky, but your result here is superb.
Thanks as always

Hi Kamila, truly a great spectacle, this isn't a pic, this is a peinture! Magnificent landscape with the typical oriental rice fields, the best details and colors from the best point of view.Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano
ChrisJ (117199) 2014-03-17 17:28
Looks like a drier version of the Bali rice terraces in Indonesia. Wonderful repetition of the contoured patterns and shapes of the rice terraces which are difficult to do justice to. I also saw some in the Philippines. Good sharpness and a nice angled pov with fine reflections in the bottom left and the farmhouse top tight adding interest. Tfs!
Subhogen (4067) 2014-03-18 0:53
Nice view of the terraced rice fields from China. I like the inclusion of the hay stubs to create FG interest. Excellent light and colour management in not so favourable situations. We have similar rice fields in the hilly regions of India as well, I guess these kind of terraced fields ensures optimal use of less available fertile land. Good one, thanks for sharing.
chrislo (4097) 2014-03-18 2:20
Your well chosen viewpoint provides a nice view of these terraced paddies. I like the graphism provided by the various enclosed patchwork fields. The mingled colours of green and brown work well to give an artistic quality to the scene. Nice sense of depth and well placed house that makes a fine focal point in your composition. Very well captured.

We look at towns and cities and immediately see how man has affected the natural land but it is also true of many areas of the countryside. This is just such an example. I am not complaining about the appearance, for I find it very attractive, just that it is very man-made.
Your photograph is beautifully composed with angular lines across the f/g, giving way to other shapes and a strongly placed house in the b/g. The colours are nicely saturated and the exposure perfectly sharp.
A lovely shot and one so different from my homeland.
My warm regards,
emka (104216) 2014-03-18 10:31
Chciałabym zobaczyć te słynne tarasy. Zwykle widziałam je na zdjeciach zielone i wypełnione wodą, ale wym jesiennym wydaniu tez prezentują sie pięknie. to najpiekniejszy region Chin, równiż ze względu na te mniejszości narodowe.
krzychu30 (15512) 2014-03-18 11:34
ourania (49861) 2014-03-18 13:10
your composition with the house well placed in a tightly cropped frame is effective and special. There's superb depth and a fascinating play of lines, curves and perspectives that describe the particular character of the scenery and keep the viewer's eyes delightfully busy. I love the richness of the natural colours and the reflections that bring interest and light at the start of this wide view. The landscape has been formed like an artwork, the view is suggestive and captivating. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Rice farming has been essential to farmers to be very creative. Those rice terraces are amazing innovation started long time ago even in my old country the Philippines. I like your pov of this paddies with good details. Well done, tfs.
kato (11630) 2014-03-28 20:50
You're capturing well this rice field by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle in which the slope of a mountain is used effectively as farmland of the compartmentation. It's also tasteful color contrast of the lush green of field and the the brown stalk of the mown rice. And, it looks like a modern firmhouse for house seen the upper right.
SWEETFREEDOM (24621) 2014-03-30 4:55
characteristic rice terrace, good high p.o.v. and contrast of colors.
Angshu (56760) 2014-04-01 21:52

Kalispera dear Kamila
This is such a stunning photo. The light is magical, like that seen in the paintings of the Masters. I love that golden tinge on the tops of the crops and how it contrasts with the greenery. A wonderful and characteristic photo, superbly and flawlessly realised.
