The Longji terraces area is famous for the excessively large number of terraced rice paddy fields on its mountain, which have created an intricate pattern on the hillsides. Set amongst the villages of the minorities Zhuang and Yao, the area allows for easy to moderate walking/hiking possibilities along and up hillsides to view the panoramas of the terraced rice fields, as well as glimpse the rural life and style of architecture found in the forest-fringed villages.
Longji means 'Dragon Backed Mountain'. When the paddies are full of water in spring, it is said to resemble the scales on the back of a dragon. The fields are beautiful all year round, in the early stages when filled with water, and as the rice grows and matures, changing colours as it does so. Winter may also see snow. Rape flowers are also to be seen in some parts and in some seasons, and along the journey here, there is forest-clad steep-sloped mountain scenery to be taken in.
Longsheng is home to four minority nationalities: Miao, Yao, Dong and Zhuang. The Yao and Zhuang nationalities live in Longji. The Yao have distinctive clothing and hair styles which set them apart from other ethnic groups. Yao women are famous for having the longest hair in the world. They never cut their hair. Instead they wrap the hair in a bun on top of their head in a style resembling an Indian turban.
We spent the whole day in Longji walking around the terraces and although the weather was a little bit foggy I managed to take couple of photos. It was however a shame that the wide panorama picture was out of question because of the lack of visibility in the valley.

Hello Kamila ,
I love terraces landscapes , and this one is splendid . I like especially the plunging view , the picturesque wooden houses , and the contrast between the green and the golden grass .
batalay (34147) 2014-02-07 14:26
You chose an excellent vantage point to reveal the patterns created by the terraced farming in the rice patties. It's a first class photo, the sort of picture one sees in National Geographic. You've also given a complementary informative note. Thank you for both.
Incidentally, on a cruise last October between Rome and Venice, we visited Zakynthos, and island I've long wanted to see. The great 16th century surgeon Vesalius was shipwrecked there in 1564.

Beautiful landscape photo. The view down to nice cascaded fields is excellent.
You heave really captured well this countryside by a very good composition and bright tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see the small houses surrounded by field with elegant shapes. The whole is harmonized well by beautiful color & light balance.
Very well done.
Wish you a very nice weekend.

This is a wonderful landscape.Perfect P.O.V.
These terraced paddy fields are intriguing and I like the way the patterns eventually make a circle. The sheds below are an added interest.

PaulVDV (19399) 2014-02-07 21:40
In this region the terraces are built on very steep slopes so that they're all quite narrow. This resulted in long lines of terraces in the landscape.
On the picture these lines are curving around the three or four houses making them to an equally interesting subject of the image. I like the fact that you didn't place these houses in the center.
You show us here a landscape that is pretty and impressive at the same time. I'm sure you will have enjoyed long hikes along the paddies and have taken lots of splendid pictures. The view reminds me a little of what I've seen long time ago in the north of the Philippines (in Banaue).
Best regards, Paul

Ciao e buon fine settimana
timecapturer (41969) 2014-02-08 3:23
really like this! Full of enticing and fascinating lines and features. A wonderfully curvy landscape full of magical detail, and a shot that shows us how industrious the production of rice is in this amazing part of the world. Excellent!
Have a great weekend - B.

Enjoy a nice weekend.
snunney (76556) 2014-02-08 4:42
You present us with a superb perspective over these paddy fields with their sinuous terraces. The soft light is very appealing and the colours similarly so. Superb sharpness throughout.
ikeharel (48491) 2014-02-08 4:52
Depth of field is a technical term in photography (DOF), Kamila.
On this picture there is a double meaning to this term: a super DOF that show well the scenery through, while looking down the trough, and its marvelous terraces.
Green and brown mingle in beautiful harmony.
Cheers for that, and ebjoy a nice weekend,
Subhogen (4049) 2014-02-08 5:09
Wonderful view of the never ending series of rice fields. They present very eye-catching graphic effect. I wonder how they carry out back breaking agricultural work on such a steep slope. It looks scary from your well chosen POV. Some of the water filled fields are reflecting the sky nicely. Very attractive photo, thanks for sharing.
SWEETFREEDOM (20840) 2014-02-08 5:10
characteristic terrace fields. good high p.o.v. and colors.
annjackman (16861) 2014-02-08 5:18
It is so interesting to find patterns in rural landscapes. This is an excellent example of terraces in China with lovely colours and sweeping curves. The buildings nestling in the bottom of the valley add scale and interest.
Beautifully rendered image.
Kind Regards, Ann

I know a smiley face is not a comment as such, but nonetheless
This is beautiful. Really this has to be one of those places that has to be seen to be believed. The rows and lines of terraces look magical and you have composed the whole scene so perfectly around the beautiful buildings in the centre. For all the skyscrapers and fast cars, airplanes and ships it is this kind of image that makes me stop and admire the ingenuity of man. To change an entire landscape, but to still have it look so beautiful is indeed a talent!
Thanks for sharing this beauty.
All the best
abmdsudi (36472) 2014-02-08 10:28
This reminds me of Yuangyang terrace field in Yunnan, it's a wonderful collaboration between man and nature, the patterns and colours and there is a multitude of detail here, an absolute treasure trove make me think of a painting or woven tapestry. It's extremely beautiful and the light is perfect. Fine shot, congrats
ricardomattos (3926) 2014-02-08 11:03

Hello Kamila. Truly an interesting photo. The Chinese farmers are masters of soil cultivation. The photo pleases me very well - and the informative text. And what I want to say in addition, - Your Gallery at TE is excellent. I look at all the pictures your typical photographic signature.

A really fantastic view here with all these lanes along the terraced fields. A marvellous pattern and a beautifully composed picture.
marina7 (8035) 2014-02-09 6:07
that's an outstanding compo! The fantastic-looking lines of the rice terraces seem to flow down towards the little huts as if ready to engulf them. Terrific sight aand the perfect point of view, love it!
Thanks and best wishes!
holmertz (34775) 2014-02-09 7:19
This is truly a magnificent view. The lines of the terraces and the shining stretches where the sky is reflected in the water have created a beautiful pattern. Seeing a place like this, where people for generations have worked hard to make a living for themselves in a difficult environment, makes me feel very small and humble.
karacabeylis (1465) 2014-02-09 8:20
it is no doubt that this shld be a top-notch job on those reputable fields in far east. the curves, rows, junctures have been displayed so masterly.

the scene benefits from the well chosen view point from where you have composed a fascinating image, the layers of curved terraces creating so many lovely patterns.
The buildings are well placed to add interest as well as giving a good sense of scale.
The overcast conditions have been well used to enhance the complementary colours.
Kind regards Les.

trevormoffiet (1800) 2014-02-09 13:39
This is a fascinating image. I love the curves of the terraces following the hill contours. The folds of the landscape lead nicely to the small farmstead nestled with a remnant of forest.
Despite the haze you have managed to produce a vibrant image. Well done.
jcpix (9324) 2014-02-09 14:09
Whoa, this is quite a fun journey from front to back, you've certainly used the patterns of these fields to your best advantage! I find myself swaying back and forth as I follow along. :) Amazing and impressive what has been accomplished by both the locals and the photographer herself. ;) I can only imagine the possibilities to create striking compositions amongst these hillsides, and you've undoubtedly come away with a strong one here. Quite a view, and an atmosphere collected to enhance the overall visual. It's cliche, but I'll say it anyway...great shot! Have a good week ahead.

Co tu gadac. Bajeczne miejsce i krajobraz. Tez chcialbym zobaczyc taka doline. Fajne ujecie z dobrego POV. Atrakcyjna fota.
adramad (33662) 2014-02-10 7:42
Spectacular and wonderful picture with this magnificent POV, showing us a great perspective of these crops rice, using the slopes of the mountains, his image brings a beautiful graphics, such as houses hidden in the depths of the depression in the ground, are a great add-in to add charm to the image.
Very nice, these very natural colors.
The lighting and sharpness are perfect.
Have a good day.
photoray (8524) 2014-02-10 13:55
Like everyone else an eye catching view of the rice field terrace patterns; lines curving in parallel over the hill terrain. And actually the foggy distance creates a mystique and perhaps better lighting than bright day light?
We have perhaps the largest rice producing fields in America in Sacramento Valley. Though the fields are very flat and require a lot of irrigation water.
I'm more into potatoes, but enjoy rice also.
krzychu30 (14996) 2014-02-10 14:36
chrislo (3763) 2014-02-11 0:40
These rice terraces ought to be counted among the wonders of the world. When I look at this picture, I realize how much hard work is necessary to cultivate the rice. I like the perspective you shot this from, with the small village as a strong point in the composition. The terraced fields create a wonderful pattern with colours of various shades. A great shot !
SnapRJW (27198) 2014-02-11 0:54
My mind boggles at the back-breaking industry that created these impressive terraces Kamila. Hardy mountain people, ingenuity and constant hard work keep the terraces planted, harvested and in good condition. Your shot shows the man-made beauty of the location in fine detail. The buildings nestled in the hillside add excellent detail to the wonderful landscape of graphic curves. A place I would love to see! Your note is comprehensive and full of good information. A super post. Warm regards Rosemary

great the panoramic view of these terraces on the slopes of the hills with the rice paddy fields to cover everything on them.A really fascinating view with the natives to did all these for their survival.
emka (68834) 2014-02-12 22:59
kato (11148) 2014-02-13 8:41
You're capturing well this place by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive to see the terrace field which is geometrically interesting in the mountain. The terrace field shows the wisdom of the farmer who is going to use land effectively. And, it's also impressive in the farmhouses in valley as well as the color contrast between the greenery and water in terrace field.
Angshu (53990) 2014-02-17 1:43
You captured the terraces well, the series of them...some brown, some green, some with water, some dry. These terraces make good viewing and I like how your created a perspective with the FG ones...the houses amidst the terraces add another dimension to the picture. Well done!
Cricri (97215) 2014-02-17 10:55
CLODO (27714) 2014-02-19 1:13
A good perspective with the rice terraces leading our eye on the lonely houses and the valley at top right, but your picture is too soft for my taste and the mountains at the end are too cyan, so I propose you my vision in a WS.
delpeoples (50721) 2014-02-21 2:10
Kalispera dear Kamila
Ahhh, this is a symphony of texture and perspective. My eyes are following the lines everywhere and I feel dizzy, no doubt the same as you felt when you viewed this marvellous sight. Impressive depth, the graphism is almost three-dimensional - and I love the slightly hazy/misty area in the far right hand corner, which sets the mood and adds another element of interest. Top marks! And what exotic places you have seen!
ChrisJ (93442) 2014-03-30 5:43
A fantastic shot of the repetitive patterns of the rice paddies. Ive seen similar in Bali, Java, Philippines, Vietnam and Nepal. They are more difficult to photograph than you would think and this is an excellent result. The traditional Chinese village in the valley adds a good focal point. Tfs!
kwekwekan (963) 2014-03-30 12:23
Glad you did not give up on the difficult lighting conditions! Great choice in framing the image without any sky - the textures of the rice fields are on display in all their magnificence and splendor. You also have great perpendicular lines, one cutting diagonally through the picture and the other leading the eye into the perfectly placed houses nestled in the valley of these rising hills.
