The staff of a small restaurant in Xining, Qinghai state, getting ready for the lunch hour rush. I am not quite sure what they are doing but it looks like they are shaping small meatballs which will probably be used to fill steamed dumplings.
This is a picture from 1986, scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Dobar rad skeniranjem, lepa fotografija.
Lepo pokazan trenutak u kujni, pravljenje cufta ...
Lepo secanje na posetu restoranu i 1986. godinu.
Prijatno vece i sve najbolje.
Good work by scanning, beautiful images.
Shown nice moment in the kitchen, making meatballs ...
Nice memories of a visit to the restaurant and 1986. year.

The kind of photos we can't get enough of.
1986!... I wasn't born yet ( i wish...), and this photo already have some historical values, considering that China is changing so rapidly. I was in Guangzhou in 1993 and where there was fields of rice way back then are now buildings and busy streets.
I can also see the reaction of the girl holding plates in her hands, alerting the others that "a gweilo is taking a photo!". Interesting costumes and hats.
Very nice street shot!

You're capturing well this restaurants by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the big pan containing a dumpling and the hearth into which the fire by which it is warmed was put. It's impressive in the employees who wear a Mao jacket and are making the dumpling, too. It shows one everyday spectacle of the local city in China well.

Ciao e buona serata

a very good and interesting composition with great depth and an excellent description of the workplace and the procedure of the work. I like very much the placement of the people. The lady looking away captivates our attention with her intense and intriguing expression and because she has caught a lot of light. Textures and colours create a strong fascination and all the people have meaningful expressions. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

The core value of this image is the value of documentary, nice group of working people, interesting equipment of the kitchen

An excellent document Gert, I like the cooking skills used there
I don't know what food is it but anyway street restaurants keep a good experience for them
Good sharpness, fine colors and light

Great atmosphere and POV here, Gert, with the machine taking up the FG while the workers go about their chores. I like the layered effect here very much, as we follow the action back into the store. Beautiful light shining on the front two here, separating them out from the BG well. Another great old scan from your China trip - keep them coming!

Hello Gert. I see the stove and think about what is in the huge pan. Now I read the text. Interesting is the kitchen staff. Also, today's photo is a nice look back.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

the reality of this photo is striking and for some reasons reminds me of quite tough time in Poland about 25 years ago. Great scene and well captured. The grain makes it look very much like one of the reportage photos. Nice natural colors and very good composition.
Thanks for sharing

Charming everyday scene. I like the POV and the elements of your capture. Well taken.

Another of your wonderful Kodachrome slides which depicts "real life" in interesting locations.
Here we see cooks busily forming some round food "balls" beside a huge furnace which dominates the foreground of the photograph - a curious big iron casting which appears to be full of glowing coals and which also appears to be fitted with some sort of electrically driven fan or bellows to breathe life into it. And on top of that sits a huge wok, its contents bubbling and cooking.
A well seen and well taken photograph which is of excellent quality considering just how difficult and varied the lighting conditions are here. Good colours, lots of interest and excellent details.
marabu61 (6303) 2013-04-04 11:47
Another of your wonderful historical shots from an other China. That stone oven is interesting and I love the little detail of the communist star on the electrical billow.
With this kind of shots one asks always what happend to the people pictured in it?

Kielia (21953) 2013-04-05 7:49
you are presenting the busy persons taken from a very well working POV! It is another fascinating impression from your archives. I like the details and I like how the young lady is watching the photographer. My compliments!
macjake (48363) 2013-04-05 8:18
hmmm....love dumplings! or at least the canadian version of dumplings! :)
its so interesting to sit and view the type of machinery they used, it looks very rustic and 'well used'. The irony of it all is that it probably still works today and will hardly ever break down - unlike todays machinery where it seems to be built to break down so the company can make MORE money by repairing it.
anyways...another cool shot from the past :)

Another time freeze moment..
The photo tell us stories, I love the atmosphere in that place, the lady who's making the dumpling looks like she has the time of her life. She's dreaming :-) And captured by you...
Nicely and scanned very well... the rusty wooden nicely framed the whole scene..
Keep them coming :-)

Hi dear Gert

Chinese dumplings.. When i am somewhere I always eat what the locals eat (no, not insects or grilled bats or scorpions..) so often I had steamed dumplings (jiaozi) when I was in China. They were delicious and I make them sometimes at home, I have even such a basket to cook on the steam. So this shot is very tasty for me. Interesting this big oven.
You have such rich archive so no problem to reach 1500 photos. And I will not probably have so many countries you have here.

Hello dear Gert,
I missed this and the following one !I am not shure if I should switch back to analog ! It's such a great difference which does not explain with simple words but it is !
A perfect archival entry of those good old times. 1986, almost 30 years ago but as if it was only yesterday ! The star at the center of the blower shows that those people had some respect of their metiers.
TFS and best regards

Another good old one! The restaurant seems really simple, but everything seems so authentic here. I really like the details in foreground and the couple seems so concentrated on their conversation they didn't even notice you. A very good old daily scene!

Good scan work of an interesting daily live in Xining (I were there an year ago)

Well done, congrats

Hi dear Gert
I love photos like this, they're reportage and a great look into the daily lives of others. And on top of that, they involve food and people, you couldn't ask for a better combination. I love the colour caste here, no doubt as a result from the old scan. As I was saying to Ike this week, this is the effect that people use the latest software programs trying to achieve that retro look. Excellent shot, thanks for sharing.
annjackman (16507) 2013-04-16 8:52
This is a super record of this place. You framed it very well giving a lovely glimpse of life in this restaurant. All the elments are interesting and well positioned. I like the hot red emebers. A great scan.
Kind Regards, Ann

An interesting picture.
These youngsters must be around 50 by now, and I wonder if they are still making dumplings.
The quality of the scanning from a slide is excellent.

Another oldie goodie stuff here. I love the ambience and the authethic feel where everything looks rather old stepping back in time. The Mao hat and blue jackets were common then and even their looks were rather conservative. An eye catching sight of a wonderful glow of side light hitting those faces are real bonus, I love. The pp treatment is splendid, the toning has worked really well. the oldie look and the colors well depicting the time gone by. Excellent work with the aging treatment and good archiving. Well done
Wanda1 (14654) 2013-06-17 7:58
The interesting documentary from your archives continues with this nice shot, just a daily life scene, but with super details and elements. A trip back in history, but a timeless shot as I am sure they are still making and cooking this way in some parts.
Urs (14082) 2013-08-03 19:56
That's the China which I saw during my first visit to the Middle Kingdom in 1984. It was blue and green e.g. the jackets and the food was so so. Travelling was difficult, for every destination I needed a permit issued by the public security. Excellent scan, very good processing to digital work. She saw you but kept on working. Well done
NorthernLight (1205) 2013-11-04 7:37
En mycket intressant bild. Nedre höger på en fläkt (är det en fläkt?) kan man se en magisk symbol, ett pentagram. Jag visste inte att det är känt i den här kulturen.
Ha det bra

I think we have see one of the small results of the Dčng Xiăopíng reforms in China. Excellent daily life photo, I'd like to visit some provinces in China in the future, but I am very busy with another directions.
Thanks for memories.
