Reminiscing old time. This is a scan image taken many years ago on my trip to Tibet, on the out skirt of a small village of Tingri, near the Everest Base Camp. It was all quiet but the sound of the bitter cold wind. The sky is threatening with rain. Just when we were getting ready to go back to our room to stay warm, out of the nowhere the sound the galloping noise of the horse, and the man and his horse wagon appeared around the corner. The whole scene was like something so surreal like a scene from old movies, and not in real life. The man was hiding his face from the wind and the rain has just started. I don’t think he ever realized we were there.
Life is extremely difficult up here. Nothing much really grows at this altitude. Not a single tree or anything green in sight, but strong bitter cold wind and barren land. Yet people live and survived up here with so little.

what took you so long to post this beauty on TE!
you're so right, its like something out of a hollywood movie set!
what were the odds of this man and horse riding by at that exact moment!
love the framing and borders too.
excellent grab shot, you took advantage of the opportunity at hand

What a nice shot again !
12 years old ? ! Was that with film or digital ?
Really a masterpiece, and a good choice of B&W for the mood
Suppiluliuma (3913) 2012-10-17 11:23
This a powerful documentary shot. I like the b&w choice, which strengthens the feeling of hardship in Tibet.
Did you have a chance to read the book titled (or its documentary movie), "A Year in Tibet" by Sun Shuyun? That's how I got acquainted with the daylife of ordinary Tibetans. I strongly recommend reading it.
PS: Did you process the sky at PS?

Hi Way, actually looks like a picture of another century, but a good and interesting image that shows the hard life of other people in other places. Very good and interesting job very well done, congratulations my friend. Tfs.
Good morning and happy rest of week.
Best regards and best wishes.
Jeppo (17645) 2012-10-17 11:55
wonderful black and white. it makes the compo timeless...and the doors' song fits to the image like a glove
ktanska (28729) 2012-10-17 12:17
This is a timeless shot, life goes on the way it's been there for decades if not centuries. And that makes B&W right choice. You have excellent focus on the man and the horse while surronding space has soft, foogy feeling
Sonata11 (33971) 2012-10-17 13:36
Your picture is a masterpiece. Magnificent executed image. Fantastic choice of B&W color for this pic and for this scene. An amazing sharpness, clarity, light. I really love it. Awrsome. Thanks for sharing.
All the best,

This photo is incredible, or rather, the view is incredible. It's really timeless. I can't see a thing that wouldn't have been the same 100 years ago. It's also a very well treated scan of a very high quality.
ACL1978 (7511) 2012-10-17 14:26
Incredible shot, and such great quality for a scan as well... there's unquestionably a mythic or cinematic mood here, and an amazing setting. The frame and title you've given it enhance that as well. Really nice work.
ciakgiak (30433) 2012-10-17 15:18
What a wonderful image, really splendid, the subjects and the landscape are superb .
pascal13 (2100) 2012-10-17 20:03
Beautiful image well composed, conditions of life must be difficult in these regions to beautiful landscapes but I guess sometimes hostile, and the black and white broadcasts well here this impression.
I like your choice for the frame.Very nice work.
abmdsudi (57168) 2012-10-17 21:14
Looking at this I feel as if that this was taken way back in the 40s or 50s. Ah, I like the oldie look depicting the time gone by and you've done it in a beautifully evocative photograph, nice timeless quality that also works remarkably with the aging treatment in mono that adds to the setting and mood very well. A classic picture indeed and I really envy your discovery from this remote top of the world landscape, giving us a real feel of the location and the pace of life then, a picture with a charming feel. It is what makes the world so interesting. Delightful stuff! TFS. Hv a great day.

Hello, this is one of the most incredible images I have seen in a long time. It is artistic andreminiscent of the old masters.

Hi Way. Simply excellent. Fine black and white conversion. Overall, an interesting photo, - presented masterfully.

Nice to see people living far from the city still remain their traditiobal life style with using a simply carriage, nice typical mountain view in background, distinct scanned image, thanks for sharing a value old photo.
SnapRJW (31629) 2012-10-18 2:27
Hello Way - I think I recognise this one, a real beauty and an excellent note to compliment it. The shot conveys the conditions you describe very well and B&W is a good choice to convey the mood. A timeless photograph. Warm regards rosemary
Kielia (24077) 2012-10-18 4:07
you are presenting the carriage taken from a very well working POV! It is a fascinating impression with a fantastic perspective. Black and white works excellently. My compliments also for the note and the title!
mayjayne (6618) 2012-10-18 4:47
Your picture makes us wish for the excellent sharpness and timeless quality of photos taken on film. It's a wonderful composition; something that makes one think, and absorb. Reading your note redefines that.
maria-v1981 (10932) 2012-10-18 8:10
Very good composition and formation and most of all wonderful post processing on this image.
Although the b&w is very light, you achieved to have a lot of contrast and give a wonderful rendering to the various textures.
Have a nice evening,
CLODO (35362) 2012-10-19 0:36
Attractive B&W picture with soft hues. Decisive moment taken.
npecanhuk (76927) 2012-10-19 7:15
Black & white image and borders, management of (difficult) light, level of sharpness, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,
mkamionka (39533) 2012-10-19 8:44
very surreal scene indeed. It seems like a picture from very old times. The man in the carriage somehow does not fit to this rugged landscape. He seems to be misplaced. Very interesting capture so full of atmosphere. It suits well National Geographic style.
Have a great weekend,
fabbs99 (17175) 2012-10-19 23:42
Thats a class apart .No word can describe the beauty and perfection of this work.Incredible.
Bluejeans (64251) 2012-10-20 9:23
Ola way ,
Sem duvida 5 estrelas esta tua foto com este homem nesta carroça nesta paisagem de aspeto gelada , parece um lugar bem pobre este no Tibete , boa escolha pelo preto e branco , parabéns!!
Um abraço Gonçalo
Vague (307) 2012-10-21 8:47
Very good use of black and white! The cadre is good and the posture of both man and horse are very expressive! The ISO-grain renders the photo full of character. Bravo!
delpeoples (59434) 2012-10-22 17:37
What a timesless shot, which highlights the harshness and isolation of this landscape. Even the demeanour of the man driving the cart shows us what a hard life it is out here. The B&W further accentuates this idea and the bleakness and unforgiving nature of the terrain. Excellent shot and scan.
Have a beautiful day, oh Naughty One
danos (101794) 2012-10-23 0:37
fascinating the view of this B/W format with the lonely man and his horse wagon to passing by in front of your lens, making the scene so authentic and unique.
Reading your note joined with your narration this unique moment as the bitter of the cold wind.
fritzi007 (11860) 2012-10-25 10:41
incredibly, the living conditions of people, you're right. Your photo has a very high quality, congratulations!
Robert1969 (7160) 2012-10-25 11:55
An older picture, but also a picture with a
great quality. Yhe B&W makes the picture
timeless and the title.....Yes I have now
the song of "the Doors" in my head.
Tigerlily (3379) 2012-10-25 15:31
Beautiful image.. excellently taken. As you said.., it does look surreal.. perhaps because we don't expect to see a living thing in such an environment.. They came as a surprise, and resulted a superb image. Great work...
Angshu (56760) 2012-10-28 21:48
This was the pick of the theme 'Slow'...right?
What a fantastic shot & a dreamy, timeless feeling which is epitomized by the use of monotones. A classic masterpiece!
PS : You're off to Nepal soon, right? Wouldn't it be biting cold?

Vous êtes un poète à travers vos photographies. Il y a une sorte de magie qui transparaît dans chacune de vos compositions, et ce, pour notre plus grand plaisir.
Très bonne soirée.
Didi (60590) 2012-10-30 4:55
Well done with this B&W composition
Interesting scene and good use of the grey scale and interesting notes.
maloutim (9639) 2012-10-30 18:14
Beautiful, old photo which you turned into black and white with great success.
Excellent capture that brings out the beauty of the barren plateau, with the snowy peaks in the horizon; but also the harshness of life : The man is not so sharp, but you can still guess his way of life , in this desert.
Thanks for bringing out this old photo out of your archives.
mirosu (16273) 2012-10-31 23:10
Extra high quality B&W photo. The clarity and deep depth of field is perfect. A well presented crop allows eyes to remain fixed on the horse cariage and the rider. The well harmonized B&W tones and the white hills also lend a lovely contrast to the scene. Well done. Have a nice day.
COSTANTINO (68194) 2012-11-01 23:06

adores (46299) 2012-11-02 17:00
Seems there was no one else around: just you and the man with his cart. A great b&w conversion. The scene is just perfect with this wide landscape as background. Impressive place!
pajaran (64410) 2012-12-11 23:34
Lep trenutak sa gospodinom koji putuje sa svojim konje, i lepu prirodu ...
Dobar trenutak snimka, kontrast i perspektiva.
Dobar tekst i kompozicija, lepo pokazan trenutak i planine sa snegom.
Sve najbolje sa lepim secanjem na posetu Tibetu.
A nice moment with Mr. traveling with their horses, and beautiful nature ...
A good time recording, contrast and perspective.
Good lyrics and compositions, shown nice moment and mountains with snow.
All the best with the beautiful memories of the visit to Tibet.
Cricri (123740) 2012-12-16 8:58
Une très jolie réalisation, j'aime l'encadrement noir qui met la scéne en valeur dans un doux contraste du N/B, très jolie
Nard (6972) 2012-12-27 4:33
What a splendid shot. The atmosphere given by the B&W enhances the difficulty of the situation. The constrats is well managed. I really like it.
jemaflor (101321) 2013-01-01 11:48
Well presented with this black frame and interesting scene well captured, tfs.
Bonne année 2013 !

Excellent b&w masterpiece! It reminds me any phot artworks from big albums with expensive paper in my childhood. My congratulations! Tibet is my old dream.

this is a beauty.just saying..AMAZING & WOW!
Wanda1 (15142) 2013-06-22 23:38
You have so many great shots in your gallery that I have missed lately. I chose this one as I am a fan of black and white and because it is simply a great image. The atmosphere is special and the landscape looks harsh and unforgiving. Love the snowy peaks in the background, and of course the man and his old horse drawn cart are just so impressive against this backdrop. A testament to the strength of man to survive. Tibet is still on my wish list for one day.
ChrisJ (117199) 2013-10-12 5:09
Another superb b&w image brought to life by the solitary man and his wagon and horse. Impeccable sharpness with excellent tonal range and graphism. The snowcapped peaks make a magnificent backdrop. The diagonal path adds dynamism. Tfs!
pili51 (1853) 2014-08-29 8:22
really enjoy viewing your gallery :) your shots bring your personal stamp.
this one caught my attention right away, and it's easy to understand why.
I like the b&w choice, which fits to the image like a glove, strengthens the feeling of hardship in Tibet.
Region to beautiful landscapes but I guess sometimes hostile, the black and white broadcasts well here this impression.
Love the misty atmosphere.....Elegant photo! Well done.
Have a great weekend.
