" What a sky without a Moon and what a life without a Chayhana? "

The Chayhana is a Central Asian institution, It's not only the place, where any time of the year, people gather for cup of tea, it is also the place where people talk anything and everything about daily life and discuss any problems. Sometimes they meet to do business, but mostly they just like to chat and tell jokes and news of the day and exchange information. This is an old chayhana that still survises, hidden in the back alleyways in the old city of Kashgar which serves as the traditional meeting place for most Uighur men and most patrons are in their fifties who come to enjoy the warmth and company of the teahouse.

Topics of discussion generally revolve around day-to-day life or religion when the imam from the neighboring mosque appears. The funishing and decors are sparse, wood cabinets store pots and cups while elevated wood platform serve as the seating area and patches of shaded colors hint the one time painted walls and doors in the dim light condition. I simply loved the character and charm of this traditional teahouse and the feel is just like stepping back in time. This chayhana is timeless, unaffected and unconcerned by the passage of time at least for now. As with many of the establishments in the old quarter, the Uighur chayhanas are an endangered species, threatened by commie demolition team and hopefully as the high rise towers continue to sprout up throughout the city, it will remain that way....

This quite close shot was taken by placing the camera on my jacket on the table unnoticed. Prefocused, preset on apperture priority on manual mode, shutter was released using remote control when situation was ripe without the need of touching the camera. I was simply attracted by the characterful elderly Uighur before my eyes who seemed so serious and fully engrossed in the conversations.
