Chikan Street Market, a photo from Guangdong, South

Photographer's Note

This is a scene fast disappearing from modern China. Chikan is one of the few Chinese towns still displaying this old 1920's style of shop-house architecture. The colourful umbrellas & fruit in the fg added a splash of colour. I waited for a break in the traffic as I did NOT want a dozen or more very blurred speeding motorbikes and bicycles in the foreground. This explains why the street looks deserted. Taken on a dull cloudy day too, so I have added a little blue cyan to the washed out sky.

nice this open air marketin Chikan.It's very original and it's pity to disappear this charmy scenery with all these fruits and vegetables to are spread in both sides of the street, making the image so authentic and unique.Excellent the light and the colour management.

Happy yet the old system of market with sellers along the street and fruits on the ground.

a great shot of everyday life and amazing that it should have traffic hurtling along it with everything being at curbside. Wonderfully colourful, sharp and full of character. Fascinating!

Hi Chris,

The length of the street is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the food stalls and of the architecture of the buildings. The presence of the people is showing a daily activity. Have a nice day.

Hello Chris,

There is always conflict, with a desire to modernise on one hand and a desire to keep the old, traditional familiar on the other. I suppose, it is important to have people with a sense of the history, a sense of the traditions, to make the important decisions - not always the case!

There is so much to learn from this shot about the lives of the people. I was very interested to see that they had modern umbellas to protect their produce, whilst the rest seems much more unsophistacated.
I like your pov, with such a lot of iterest in the f/g and strong guide lines to link to the balancing b/g.
