Dali Ancient city, located in northwest of Yunnan Province, is a fascinating place to explore. Built in 1382 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it has been amongst the top listed historical cities of China since 1982. Amongst the attractions are the tranquil Erhai Lake to the east and Cangshan Mountain to the west. Dali Ancient city was a gateway to the Silk Road in Southwest China, and also served as a seat of government and a major military barracks for Yunnan Province in ancient times. Home to traditional Bai ethnic minority with the prominent city wall gives the city a distinctive feel unlike any other Chinese city.

This is the impressive South City Gate of the walled city, remnants of the four original gates that guarded the city in the 14th century. Shot taken on a cloudy late afternoon, with Cangshan mountain heavily clouded on the left.
