Photographer's Note

Sitting waiting for a friend in Starbucks (of all places) in the central business and shopping area of Chongqing, I happened to notice this scene out of the window....I admire Bresson's work from China....I admire Bresson's work from wherever.....but this scene made me think of all those years which have passed in between.....for me this photo bridges both of these worlds, mine and his and the China of the grandfather and the grandson......as for Cartier, well a western jeweller of this pedigree in a city like Chongqing would have been unthinkable in Bresson's day.....it is only in the last ten years that Cartier have expanded in China, which is now a quarter of its business. However, interestingly they began creating Chinese influenced designs as early as 1888!

Bresson's post war/civil war China was a world apart from the booming industrial/commercial metropolis of Chongqing as it is today....the echoes are there in the old people and decaying infrastructure of the past but how fast that is disappearing........yet, here in the middle of all this wealth, modernity and aspiration the old methodologies of the work gang still prevail........

A slightly punchier version exists in the workshop......
