Xitang's canals., a photo from Zhejiang, East

Photographer's Note

During a mini cruise in one of the most known canals of Xitang, I saw this arch bridge,one of the 104 bridges of the city,with this superb reflection.

Xitang is in Jiashan County, Zhejiang Province.

The area has a flat terrain, and the nine rivers that run through the town divide it into eight parts.
Xitang is known for its bridges, lanes, and ceilinged corridors. There are 104 bridges of varied structure, all from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, some looking like rainbows over the river, and others like long flutes.Standing on one of these bridges and watching the boats through a round opening, one feels drawn into deep meditation on the past.

Many of the shops and houses in Xitang are built on the riversides. There are a total of 122 lanes, long and short, wide and narrow. The lanes are paved with stone planks, polished by the feet of pedestrians as well as hundreds of years of weathering. Together with the black-tiled houses along the roads, the polished stone planks bear witness to the town's long history.

An advisor from the UNESCO World Heritage Center spoke highly of Xitang after coming here."Xitang is like the limpid and melodious music of a flute," he said. "People need to appreciate it with their heart."

I guess this place is attracting lots of visitors! 104 bridges...I think in Venice there are about 400(if no mistake). The vertical formats works well and like very much the pov, the perspective effect and reflections!

Hi Danos,

The reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The presence of the people has an effect of scale. The point of view leads my eye through the arch toward the other bridge which is giving depth to the photo. The luminosity has a good effect on the colors. have a nice day.

Hello Danos,

Oh, wow, who wouldn't want to capture that shot where the reflection of the bridge attaches itself to the real bridge, creating an eye-shape which commands attention! It sucks the gaze though and on towards the next bridge!
Excellent sharpness capturing wonderful and precise details.

You know, Danos, I would crop a little from the top of the shot. With that done, the view through the bridge is more at eye-level and it also encourages greater interest in the f/g water reflections. Just try it!

Kalinikta, Danos. You were well inspired in choosing the vertical format which gives us the opportunity to see the reflections of the houses and the perspective of the bridges. The people on the first bridge give the scale and the bridge itself adds depth to the image. The light on the water is good, but maybe I would have preferred a slightly darker sky, but this is only my opinion.

And when already mentioned a comparison, I find the old house (and its reflection) right is an additional value of this photo (and therefore I do not think a stronger crop on the top would have been a good idea since it would have removed part of this important element).

Hello Danos, This is truly an amazing shot. Great composition and outstanding colors. The reflections in this shot are truly fantastic. Nothing so interesting in the canals of Venice or Amsterdam.
I was unaware of this place and I would really like to go there. My last trip to China was in 1989 when things were very lively in Tianamin Square with the students protesting. You have done a marvelous job with this shot. Did you consider shooting this in a landscape mode? Regards, Roger

zelo posrečen motiv mostu z lepim odsevom svoje oblike v vodi. barve so lepe naravne in ostrina je zelo dobra, saj se vidi vsak detajl. lepo delo. TFS!

I only live 2 hours away from here so may take off one weekend & visit Xitang. I like the low shooting angle & circular shape formed by the reflections. Tfs!

Hello Danos,

You're capturing well this canal scene by a very good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive and interesting to see beautiful conal and the bridge with intersting shape. It's effective to catch the canal far away through front bridge, too. And, the reflection projected to the canal draws out an additionnal good mood in this image. This is a great work.
