Photographer’s Note

The New Year festival for the Miao people, one of the recognised ethnic minorities in China. The Miao people are mainly found in Guizhou province in the south of the country and celebrate their new year in November. The women dress up in fine costumes with elaborate silver headwear and take part in dancing ceremonies.

I like this shot very much because of the fact that you've chosen to shoot in black and white, and also because it is does not have a "touristy" feel to it when showing these magnificent Miao costumes. It is easy to understand why so many would like to see this event, but you have captured part of it in a very natural and beautiful way.

Hello Chris,

Nice portrait. First, I like the point of view presenting a side portrait with the placement on the border of the frame in the direction of the look. Then, we have a nice blur in background, isolating the portrait.
The photo is perhaps a bit too grey: I mean the contrast could be better, playing with the curve tool in Photoshop. Did you try?
