Photographer’s Note
Our apartment block seen from the old neighbourhood in front. I included the web of electrical cables here to add the contrast between old and new residential styles.
More and more Chinese move in to these new "gated communities", but the majority can still not afford it. Unfortunately, some unique local Shanghainese architecture is being demolished to make way for these more "clinical" highrisers. But off course, the level of comfort is higher here, (in many old neighbourhoods, for instance, toilets are public), so it can be hard to argue for preservation. A better solution, in my opinion, is renovation up to the degree that the original residents can still afford their houses. Many actually do not want to move, because they have become attached to their neighbourhood during many years of residency.
